Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. – Robert Morris University men's hockey fought back from a 2nd period deficit to tie Air Force Academy 3-3.
A physical first period led to two power play opportunities for the Colonials but neither team found the back of the net until the second frame. Not for lack of trying. RMU fired 17 shots in the first period, but freshman goaltender Shane Starrett stopped them all.
Air Force opened the scoring three minutes into the second with a Tyler Ledford goal. Three minutes and 44 seconds later, Ben Carey set up Matt Serratore for the Falcons second goal to make it 2-0.
But RMU continued to pressure the Falcons defense and cashed in midway through the second. Zac Lynch battled for the puck and connected with Tyson Wilson who found an open man in Chase Golightly who fired home the Colonials goal to cut the Falcons lead to 2-1. Golightly drew the defender out to create a screen before shooting past Starrett.
Air Force responded less than three minutes later with the Serratore-Carey line, but this time it was Carey with the goal to put the Falcons up 3-1.
Once again, the Colonials powered back within one. On the man advantage, RMU generated a number of chances from Greg Gibson and Brandon Denham but it was Lynch who cashed in on the doorstep for his second goal of the season, pulling the Colonials within one.
Robert Morris dominated shots on goal 12-4 in the third. After a Falcons turnover, Denham took the puck and found Brady Ferguson who fired home a shot to tie the game 3-3.
Terry Shafer stopped a shot from the point and made another key save in the final minute of regulation to preserve the tie and force overtime. Neither team scored in the overtime frame, resulting in the 3-3 tie. Both teams take a point from the contest, giving RMU a three point weekend and a 1-0-1 record.
Robert Morris continues their Atlantic Hockey schedule next weekend on the road at Niagara University on Friday and Saturday at 7:05pm.
