Moon Township, Pa. – Just as the
Robert Morris University volleyball team took down LIU Brooklyn on the road earlier this season, the Blackbirds turned the tables on the Colonials and avenged the loss as they defeated RMU, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in the Sewall Center.
Despite the loss, three Colonials (12-12, 6-3) tabbed double-doubles against the Blackbirds (9-12, 8-2). Junior
Arden Fisher recorded a team-leading 13 kills and 20 digs. Freshman
Taylor Lord posted 12 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore setter
Brianna Frakes earned her second consecutive double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Additionally, senior
Kristin Thompson continued her hot streak through Northeast Conference (NEC) action with 10 kills on .435 hitting. Junior
April Krivoniak turned in a solid performance and recorded two season-highs with 22 digs and five block assists.
Unfortunately for Robert Morris, the Colonials were unable to combine so many outstanding individual performances into one collective team effort that was enough to take down the three-time defending NEC champion Blackbirds.
RMU's improvement with each set culminated in the third frame, when the Colonials topped the Blackbirds, 25-23, after trailing, 2-0, in the match. As the Colonials began to eliminate the Blackbirds' early scoring streaks in sets one and two, the set scores became closer and closer, but RMU was unable to completely silence the LIU offense. The Blackbirds' Tamara Ignjic went off for 20 kills to lead LIU Brooklyn.
LIU Brooklyn successfully stifled one of the Colonials' recent keys to victory, which has been their stellar passing and serve receive. RMU fell victim to six reception errors in the loss.
The Colonials return to their home court on Sunday, Nov. 1 for an NEC match up with St. Francis Brooklyn at 3 p.m.
Stepping Up
Kristin Thompson is hitting .391 in NEC action and has recorded kills in double figures in eight of nine conference matches played, including the last six.
