Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's basketball team enjoyed a record setting season-opener Friday morning. The Colonials defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 124-59, eclipsing team records for points, scoring margin, rebounds, assists and field goals made while playing in front of 581 fans who came as part of the squad's annual Elementary School Day game.
Robert Morris reached the century mark in scoring for the fourth time in team history, shattering the previous record of 106 points set in 2002 against Fairleigh Dickinson. The 49 field goals were 10 better than the mark that had stood since 1997 and 37 assists were 10 more than the mark that had been tied three times, the last time in 2010. RMU pulled down 67 rebounds, eclipsing the mark of 62.
"I really like the way we came out ready to play with great excitement in the first game of the season" said 13th-year RMU head coach
Sal Buscaglia. "We talked about the fact that our season is a journey and that we wanted to start out strong on that journey. Although we certainly didn't play a perfect game, I think it was a good way to start our season. We still have to understand that there are both individual and team things that we need to work on if we are going to be successful."
Six players reached double figures in scoring – the first time that's happened at home since the 2007-08 season – led by sophomore
Mikalah Mulrain who recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs. Mulrain was 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe as she earned her double-double midway through the second period.
Jocelynne Jones also set a career-high with 13 points, going 5-of-6 from the field, and narrowly missing out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Anna Niki Stamolamprou tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists while
Rebeca Navarro had 15 points and five helpers.
Lou Mataly chipped in 13 points and freshman
Nia Adams had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in her collegiate debut.
Robert Morris removed any doubt about the outcome of this game early on with an 18-0 run that put them comfortably on top, 25-5, when Stamolamprou splashed a trey with 4:32 left in the first period. The Colonials started 10-for-15 from the field and forced seven turnovers in the first six minutes.
The Colonials tripled up on the Bobcats in the second period, 36-12, to take a 66-26 lead at the break. RMU shot 66.7 percent in the period, converting on 16-of-24 shots. Defensively, they had forced 16 turnovers, had eight steals and seven blocks by the end of the opening half.
Robert Morris oustcored West Virginia Wesleyan 43-7 over the first 11 minutes of the second half holding them to 1-of-24 shooting from the field. That allowed the Colonials to push the lead to a game-high 76 points, 109-33, with 9:15 to play.
Twelve of the 13 RMU players active for the game finished in the scoring column. The Bobcats were led by Tara Goldman and Adrian Cunningham who each had 11 points and nine rebounds. Stacy Remer tacked on 10 points.
Robert Morris returns to the hardwood Sunday, Nov. 15, when they travel to Charlotte for a 4:00 p.m. game.
