Fairfield, Conn. – A volleyball match doesn't get much closer than
Robert Morris University's five-set victory over Sacred Heart, 26-24, 23-25, 27-25, 24-26, 15-12, in the William H. Pitt Center Saturday night.
The Colonials (14-12, 8-3) are tied with the Pioneers (14-11, 8-3) for third place in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and continue their surge toward the top of the standings as they remain in the hunt to host the NEC Tournament.
Junior
Arden Fisher helped the Colonials to victory with a career-high 29 digs and 16 kills for her 15
th double-double of the season, and a season-high four service aces. Freshman
Taylor Lord had a record night with a career-high 16 kills and 17 digs for her fourth career double-double and a career-best five block assists. Sophomore setter
Brianna Frakes dished out a career-high 51 assists. Juniors
Leah Dunivan and
April Krivoniak, and senior
Kristin Thompson all tabbed double-digit kills.
In the tightest match of the season, the first four sets were decided by two points each. Robert Morris opened the deciding set on a 7-2 streak, and expanded its lead to 12-8 with the help of some timely Fisher kills.
The fourth set featured 18 tie scores and five lead changes. RMU opened the frame with a three-point lead, and would never edge the Pioneers by more than three points in that set.
Despite falling behind 12-10 in the second set, the Colonials ripped off eight unanswered points and remained poised and ready to regroup in set three.
The Colonials continue their final road trip of the season at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, Nov. 8 for a 3 p.m. match.
