Rochester, N.Y. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team and RIT were tied after 40 minutes of action, but a four-goal third period for the Colonials helped RMU to a 6-3 victory and series sweep of the Tigers Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward
Maeve Garvey was the late spark the Colonials (7-4-1, 3-1-0) needed as she scored her first and second goals of the season in the third to break a 2-2 tie and give RMU a sizeable lead. Garvey was one of five Colonials to record a multi-point effort, and tied freshman
Maggie LaGue (0-3-3) to lead all players with three points (2-1-3). Junior
Mackenzie Johnston extended her point streak to six games with a goal and an assist. Senior
Ashley Vesci scored an insurance goal late in the third and dished out a helper on one of Garvey's goals.
Robert Morris held a 2-0 advantage through 22:13 of action, but the Tigers (3-8-0, 0-5-0) responded with two goals in the second period, including a power-play tally, which snapped the Colonials' streak of 31 penalty kills without allowing a goal.
The Colonials kept RIT goaltender Jenna de Jonge on her toes in the third. Garvey scored the go-ahead goal at 6:48 into the frame, and then just 53 seconds later, freshman
Amber Rennie increased the Colonials' lead to 4-2 with her sixth goal of the season. Garvey struck again at 12:03, and Vesci sealed the deal 16 seconds later to put RMU on top, 6-2. Thirty seconds after Vesci's goal, RIT's Taylor Thurston found the back of the net, but the Tigers had too much ground to cover and not enough time to do it as the clock ran out and the Colonials headed home with the victory.
The Colonials return to home ice next weekend to host CHA opponent Penn State on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3:05 p.m. at 84 Lumber Arena.
