Colonials Tie Lions in Back-And-Forth Game 1

RMU keeps pressure on Lindenwood, but never acquires lead

Wentzville, Mo. – The game was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish, and Game 1 between the Robert Morris University women's hockey team and Lindenwood resulted in a 3-3 tie following five minutes of overtime at the Lindenwood Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.

The Colonials (9-6-4, 3-3-3) remain one point ahead of the Lions (4-11-4, 2-3-4) in the College Hockey America standings.

Sophomore Jessica Gazzola put together a two-point game with her first goal of the season and an assist. Junior Mackenzie Johnston also recorded a multi-point effort with a power-play goal and an assist. Redshirt sophomore Brittany Howard sent the game into overtime with a late third period power-play score.

RMU started the final period of regulation on its third power-play opportunity of the game, but for the third straight period of action,  Lindenwood scored first. The Lions' Sarah Bobrowski netted her second goal of the day 2:09 into the third, and Lindenwood led, 3-2, the majority of the frame. But with 2:06 remaining in the third, another power-play arose for the Colonials and Howard capitalized with the late, game-tying goal to send the CHA clash into overtime.

Lindenwood was called on a two-minute minor in overtime, which presented a fifth power-play for the Colonials, but despite taking five shots compared to the Lions' one during the man-advantage, Robert Morris could not get ahead. Each team exited the game having earned one point toward the CHA standings.

The home team went ahead, 2-1, early in the second period, but the Colonials earned two power-play chances in the frame. The Lions were only able to kill off one of the two penalties. Johnston scored on the second Colonials' man-advantage, which tied the game for the second time, 2-2.

The Lions returned to the ice in dominant fashion to start the second period and applied immediate pressure on the RMU defense. Lindenwood earned the go-ahead goal on a tip-in 2:24 into the frame.

Lindenwood opened scoring 55 seconds into the first period. Just a few minutes later, Gazzola raced down the boards and rifled a shot past the Lions' Nicole Hensley and evened the score, 1-1, with her first goal of the season at 3:15. Both squads exhibited a strong first period, with both goaltenders making key saves to keep it a 1-1 game through 20 minutes of action. Junior goaltender Jessica Dodds ended the day with 31 saves.

The Colonials and the Lions will compete in Game 2 of the CHA series on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. (EST).
