RMU Drops Season Opener at Duquesne

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Duquesne scored once in each half to defeat the Robert Morris University women's soccer team, 2-0, in the Steel City Classic at Duquesne's Rooney Field Friday night. The game was the season opener for both squads.

Duquesne jumped on top in the 36th minute following a corner kick. Maddie Layman was able to control the ball and find Katie O'Conner for the game's first marker. Robert Morris had a chance to find the equalizer in the 41st minute but sophomore Kasia Bak had her breakaway opportunity snuffed out by Dukes keeper Vanessa Perdomo.

Greer Monahan would suffer the same fate in the 83rd minute, watching her chance disappear at the hands of Perdomo. The Dukes would add to their lead just moments later when Layman converted on penalty kick in the 85th minute.

Chelsea de Jager finished with eight saves, her most since turning aside nine shots in a 2013 contest. Perdomo earned the clean sheet by stopping four RMU chances.

The Colonials return to the pitch Sunday, Aug. 23, in their second game of the Steel City Classic against Pitt. The contest is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start at Rooney Field.
