Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University volleyball team looked confident after a set one win, but allowed Duquesne to encroach on its home court advantage, as the Colonials dropped a 3-1 decision to the Dukes Tuesday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
Duquesne (2-3) widened its all-time advantage over Robert Morris (2-2), as the Colonials drop to 5-26 versus the Dukes.
The score was knotted at seven in set four as freshman
Liz Campbell entered the server's box and served for three-straight points to help RMU to a 10-7 lead, but the Dukes answered with three points of their own to tie it up at 10. The teams traded points back and forth until another tie occurred at 23 apiece. Back-to-back kills from Duquesne's Molly Davet sealed the deal for the Dukes, as Duquesne took set four, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
Junior
Arden Fisher posted her third consecutive double-double for RMU with 16 kills and 17 digs, and led the Colonials in both categories. Freshman
Taylor Lord and senior
Kristin Thompson both chipped in with nine kills apiece. Lord matched Fisher's defensive output in the back row with 17 digs, and Campbell dished out a career-high 45 assists. Collectively, the team posted its best attack percentage of the season (.224) and recorded a season-high 50 total kills.
The Colonials continued their dominance at the net, edging the Dukes in total team blocks, six to five. They have outmatched each opponent this season in total blocks, and have nearly doubled their opponents' collective total output, 38.0 to 21.0. However, the young squad fell victim to costly errors in extremely close sets, as they committed four ball handling errors and four blocking errors, while Duquesne made just two ball handling mistakes and one miscue at the net.
RMU embarks on a 14-match road swing, beginning this Friday at the Rose Hill Classic in Bronx, N.Y., where they will face host Fordham, Georgetown and Niagara.
