Moon Township, Pa. – The match looked like it was going the way of the
Robert Morris University women's soccer team early on, but by the final horn, the Colonials were looking at the wrong end of a 3-2 decision against the visiting IPFW Mastodons at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Colonials to 3-7 overall while IPFW improves to 2-8-1 overall.
A sustained offensive possession culminated in the game's first goal and the first score of the season for
Erin Ritzer.
Madison Kozlowski headed the ball forward to Ritzer at the top of the box and she made the rest happen. After beating a trio of defenders, Ritzer fired a shot low and left that put the Colonials ahead in the 6th minute.
Pressuring the Colonials for an extended period, IPFW was able to knot the game in the 35th minute. Katrina Sutherly provided the score, settling a ball in the center of the field 35 yards from net before burying a right-footed shot in the upper 90 for her second marker of the season.
The tie stood through halftime, but IPFW took the lead in the 59th minute when Rachel Good flicked a pass into the Robert Morris box where Kassidy Simpkins had found space behind the RMU defense. Simpkins first touch was a high volley that beat
Serena Donmoyer who had come off her line in an attempt to cut down the shooting angles.
It would be a short-lived lead for the Mastodons, however, as the Colonials took advantage of their first corner kick of the game. Kozlowski's service was a perfect one to the top of the six-yard box.
Maleha Kureishy was on the receiving end, heading in her first goal of the season to tie the game, 2-2, in the 60th minute just 50 seconds after IPFW had taken the lead.
The offensive fireworks were not over though as IPFW would get in one final score. Good's second assist of the game came off a near goal. Streaking into the RMU box down the left wing, Good sent a shot careening off the crossbar. Andie Lazzerini was the first player to get to the carom and capitalized with her second goal of the season giving the Mastadons the lead in the 82nd minute.
An evenly played game was reflected in the box score as each team registered 13 shots. Donmoyer made five saves for RMU while Kiley Dunning had four stops for the Mastodons.
The Colonials return to the pitch Monday, Sept. 28, when they host the Northern Kentucky Norse in a 1:00 p.m. game at North Athletic Complex.
