Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's soccer answered a second half goal by Northern Kentucky to secure a 2-1 victory at a soggy North Athletic Complex in the team's non-conference finale Monday afternoon. The victory puts the Colonials at 4-7 overall and gives them momentum heading into their Northeast Conference opener at Wagner on Friday, Oct. 2. The loss drops the Norse to 6-3 this season.
Despite wet conditions and the rain, Robert Morris played some of its best soccer of the season Monday afternoon. They controlled for much of the opening half and that early pressure paid off in the 24th minute as
Hanna Seybold played a quick throw-in into the NKU box.
Cassie Raymond turned on her defender, letting the ball run into the center of the box before finding the left side netting for her fourth marker of the season.
The Colonials defense was nearly air tight in the first half and did not give up a shot until the 34th minute. The score remained the same through halftime as the host Colonials led 1-0.
Momentum swung the other direction in the second half with the Norse controlling play. Their good chance, however, was unfruitful as senior keeper
Chelsea de Jager was able to preserve the Colonials lead early in the second half, stopping a chance for Jessica Frey who was set free by a flick from Macy Hamblin. Frey's shot from 12 yards was low and hard, but de Jager was quick to react to her right.
Northern Kentucky would not miss its next chance. After winning a foot race down the left wing, Hamblin sent a pass skipping across the RMU box. After the ball passed by several other players, Aubrey Muench controlled it and sent a shot inside the near right post to tie the game at 1-1 in the 75th minute.
The tie was short-lived, however, as the Colonials quickly reestablished the lead. In the 79th minute,
Kristie Hamilton sent a diagonal pass from the right wing to the top of the left box.
Lauren Pietrowski settled it there, then sent her second touch past Schocker and inside the near left post for her first marker of the season.
de Jager finished the game with seven saves, improving to 3-4 this year. Schocker managed five stops for the Norse.
