Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University women's soccer team and Howard University combined for three goals with less than five minutes to play as the host Bison ended up on top with a 3-2 win at Greene Stadium Friday evening. The Colonials slip to 0-4 on the year while the Bison move to 2-3 in 2015.
With the game tied at 1-1, Howard's Rasheeda Ansari pushed the ball up the right wing before getting inside and feeding Kela Gray who fired a shot inside the left post in the 86th minute. It was the fifth goal of the season for Gray.
The Colonials equalized just 52 seconds later. Senior
Lauren Sulkowski sent a ball into the box out of the corner where sophomore
Gabrielle Corrente buried a header to knot the game at 2-2. It was the second assist of the day for Sulkowski and the first goal of the year for Corrente.
The scoring wasn't over, however, as Ansari found the winner in the 88th minute just minutes after she set up the Bison's second score. Her marker with 2:41 left in regulation proved to be the gamewinner.
Robert Morris took the lead in the 34th minute on one of their five corner kicks. Sulkowski took the kick and found junior
Theresa Laux who buried a header for her first career goal. Howard tied the game in the 59th minute on an Anna Mitchell goal from the top of the penalty box.
The Colonials held the advantage in shot, 20-11, including a decisive 13-5 margin in the first half. Mackenzie Diotte was credited with 12 saves for the Bison.
The second leg of a three-game road set is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Youngstown State.
