Friedmann's Late Goal Lifts RMU in Thriller, 5-4

Brandon Denham scores two goals in victory at Holy Cross

Worcester, Mass. – David Friedmann scored with 40 seconds remaining to break a 4-4 tie, lifting Robert Morris men's hockey to a 5-4 victory over Holy Cross on Friday night. A back and forth game all night long ended in thrilling fashion in a battle between the top two teams in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The win gives Robert Morris (14-6-3, 11-3-3 AHC) a four-point lead over the Crusaders in the conference standings, though Holy Cross still has two games in hand.

Holy Cross scored 3:23 into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Robert Morris came back with a power play goal by Brandon Denham, his seventh strike on the man advantage this season. Denham tipped the puck into the net off a shot from the point by Chase Golightly, second assist awarded to Friedmann.

The game was tied at one heading into the second and once again, the Crusaders were first to strike. Brett Lubanski netted a goal 5:21 into the period to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead. In similar fashion to the first period, Robert Morris answered on the man advantage. Friedmann and Golightly again with the helpers, this time for Daniel Leavens who potted his fifth power play goal of the season, eleventh overall, tying the game at two.

With 4:02 remaining in the second, Greg Gibson gave the Colonials their first even strength tally of the game. Zac Lynch nearly buried a goal, but Lynch and Evan Moore were able to corral the rebound with Lynch eventually setting Gibson up for the one-timer. Gibson's seventeenth goal of the season, tying with Lynch for the team lead, gave Robert Morris its' first lead of the game. Less than two minutes later, the Crusaders respond. T.J. Moore puts home his first goal of the game to tie the game back up at three and that's how the second period finished.

In the final frame, Timmy Moore fired a puck towards Holy Cross goaltender Paul Berrafato and Denham again made his net-front presence known, deflecting the shot into the net to regain the lead for RMU. Holy Cross's Moore led the rallying charge in the third, firing a shot on Colonials goaltender Terry Shafer that he kept out of the net by the edge of his stick in mid-air right above the goal line. The save preserved a one-goal Colonials lead, but the Crusaders' Moore made sure the second time was a charm, getting a goal past Shafer with 2:47 remaining and tying the game at four.

With the clock winding down, Tyson Wilson made a pass along the boards to Gibson on the left side of the net, before Gibson made a pass through traffic in front to a waiting Friedmann who blasted home the game-winning goal with just 40 seconds remaining. The goal marks the ninth game-winner of Friedmann's career, tying him for fourteenth among all active players nationally. The win is the ninth of the season for Shafer, matching last season's total. The senior goaltender made 32 saves in the victory.

The Colonials went 2-for-5 on the power play, increasing their NCAA-best power play percentage to 34.7, scoring their 33rd and 34th power play goals of the season. Denham's two-goal night brings his career total to 36, tying him with Colin South (2010-14) for ninth on the RMU all-time goals list. Lynch's assist gives him 136 career points, tying him with Chris Margott (2005-09) for third all-time in points at Robert Morris. Friedmann and Wilson each climbed up a spot in the Colonials career assists record book, Wilson tying Scott Jacklin (2011-15) for sixth with 59 and Friedmann passing Trevor Lewis (2008-12) for eighth place with 54.

Robert Morris and Holy Cross wrap up the season series Saturday night in Worcester at 7:05 pm.
