Colonials Fall to Dartmouth at Ledyard Classic

Greg Gibson scores 50th career goal in the loss

Hanover, N.H. – Greg Gibson's fiftieth career goal was the lone tally in Robert Morris University's 5-1 loss to Ledyard Classic host Dartmouth College Saturday night. The Colonials were outshot by the Big Green 37-18.

The game was fairly even back and forth in the first, neither team able to find a goal. Just 27 seconds into the second frame, Nick Bligh scored a power play goal to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. Carl Hesler extended that lead to 2-0 11:50 into the second and that score would hold into the third. RMU was outshot 18-3 in the second period.

In the third, the Colonials found a spark with a milestone marker for Gibson. The senior forward's fiftieth career goal was a snipe from the right circle over the shoulder of Charles Grant, cutting the Dartmouth lead to one.

The Big Green regained a two-goal advantage 8:17 into the third on a goal by Brad Schierhorn. Connor Yau put the game away with 4:04 remaining before a Jack Barre empty-net goal capped the scoring with 2:11 left to play. Terry Shafer made 32 saves with Saturday night's loss bringing his record to 6-4-1.

The Colonials went 0-3 on the power play, ending a streak of 12 consecutive games with at least one power play goal, marking just the fourth time this season Robert Morris hasn't scored on the man-advantage.

"We just got outworked," said Head Coach Derek Schooley after the game. "Hats off to Dartmouth. Anytime you get outworked in a hockey game no matter who you're playing, you're going to lose the hockey game. Hats off to them. They wanted it, they went out and took it."

"We didn't capitalize on our power play and our power play has been outstanding," said Schooley. "We turned too many pucks over tonight. They took advantage of their chance and that took a lot of wind out of our comeback."

Robert Morris (11-5-3, 8-3-3 AHC) returns to action at the Ledyard Classic on Sunday against Union College, a 3-2 winner over No. 20 Merrimack on Saturday.
