Gibson Reaches Milestone in Colonials 6-1 Rout

Greg Gibson hits 100 career points with a goal on a three-point night

Pittsburgh, Pa. –  Greg Gibson scores his one-hundredth career point with a goal off the post with twenty-six seconds left in the second period, helping Robert Morris university to a 6-1 victory over Mercyhurst and take a four-point lead for first place in the Atlantic Hockey conference standings.

The Colonials took a two to nothing lead at the end of the first period with a pair of goals coming in the final five minutes of the frame. Brandon Denham notched his thirtieth point this season with another diving reach to tap a puck into the net. Brady Ferguson corralled the puck in the left wing corner, tossed it towards the net where Matt Cope flicked a shot that caromed off the goaltender's pad and Denham swatted the puck in, reaching from behind the net. With two minutes remaining in the first, Brandon Watt hopped the boards for a line change and grabbed it from between two Lakers near the Colonials blue line and raced up the ice alongside Gibson and fired home his first collegiate goal to give Robert Morris a 2-0 lead.

The second period gave the Colonials three opportunities with their NCAA leading power play but none came to fruition. Nearing the end of the period, Eric Israel moved the puck ahead to Zac Lynch who dropped a pass for Gibson and the senior ripped a shot off the goaltender that ricocheted off the far post and into the net for his on-hundredth career point. The goal is the fifty-fifth of Gibson's career and ties him for the NCAA goals lead with his nineteenth of the season. The point earned by Lynch on the assist moves him into sole possession of second place all-time in scoring at Robert Morris, passing Nathan Longpre (138 points) with career tally 139, now trailing only Cody Wydo at the top with 150 career points.

Robert Morris' power play would not go back-to-back nights without a goal. Spencer Dorowicz wins a faceoff back to Gibson for a give-and-go as Dorowicz snipes the goal over the shoulder of Lakers netminder Adam Carlson for his fifth goal of the season. The Colonials power play continues to lead the nation, converting 32.4 percent of its' chances.

Mercyhurst broke Terry Shafer's shutout bid with less than eight minutes to play, but the senior made 36 saves, maintaining his spot atop the conference with a .930 save percentage. The Lakers power play goal snapped a streak of 22 straight successful penalty kills at home, dating back to a November 29 game against Sacred Heart.

Watt earned his second career point with an assist on a goal by Daniel Leavens with just under seven minutes to play. For Leavens, the goal marked the fiftieth point of his career. Chase Golightly closed the scoring with a goal from Gibson and Tyson Wilson, Wilson's second assist of the night and Golightly's fourth goal of the season. Golightly's goal came in an odd situation as the team's were playing 3-on-3 with a pair of defensemen and Gibson on the ice. Wilson registered a plus-five to broaden his conference lead in the category, now a plus-27 for the season, third-best in the country.

The Colonials have now scored six or more goals in six games this season, continuing to lead the nation in goal-scoring with 111 goals, two points back of the nation's points lead with 296 points (St. Cloud State, 298).

Robert Morris (15-7-4, 12-4-4 AHC) is off next weekend and returns to action on the road at Sacred Heart University on February 5-6.

Third Star - Terry Shafer (36 saves, 1 goal against)
Second Star - Brandon Watt (1 goal, 1 assist)
