Lynchburg, Va. – The
Robert Morris University football team got off to a promising start, but things quickly turned as they fell at Liberty, 41-7, at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Va., Saturday night. The Colonials slip to 1-4 while the Flames improve to 2-3.
The Colonials return to Joe Walton Stadium and open Northeast Conference play next Saturday, Oct., 8, against Saint Francis U. The game serves as Homecoming with the kick-off slated for 3:00 p.m.
RMU accumulated 113 of their 204 yards in the first quarter.
Andrew Romanchak finished the game 12-23 for 105 yards and one touchdown. He threw three interceptions. His favorite target was
Tim Vecchio who hauled in five passes for 28 yards.
DeLano Madison,
Blake Skuratowicz and
Malik Wells each had two receptions.
Wells carried 17 times for 73 yards and
TJ Neal tacked on 30 yards as he toted the rock 10 times.
Gerald Ferguson and
Joseph Uhatafe had 10 tackles apiece.
The Colonials second drive turned into seven points as they worked their way 70 yards in seven plays. The big play came when Romanchak swung a pass out to the right sideline to
DeLano Madison who rambled 36 yards to the 11-yard line. The freshman quarterback wrapped up the drive hitting
Blake Skuratowicz out of the backfield for a two-yard TD.
After forcing two three-and-outs on the first two Liberty possessions, the two personal fouls on the Colonials defense, including a targeting foul and ejection of
Marcelis Branch, fueled Liberty's first scoring drive of the night. The final play was a one-yard pass from Calvert to tight end Zac Foutz on fourth-and-goal.
Robert Morris had gone 57 yards on five plays and looked like they were going surge ahead, 14-7, when Romanchak spotted Madison in the right corner of the end zone. Chris Turner, however, made a tremendous play and hauled in a one-handed interception. The Flames would turn and go 80 yards in 10 plays, Calvert finding Antonio Gandy-Golden on the left side. Gandy-Golden hauled in the short pass and tight-roped down the sideline for a 14-yard score and a 14-7 lead.
A three and out followed by a 36-yard punt from
Adam Check gave Liberty the ball on their own 31. On the first play of the drive, Calvert fired deep and hit Dante' Shells for 69 yards with 4:59 left in the second quarter. The score would remain 21-7 into halftime.
On the Colonials first drive of the second half, Solomon McGinty undercut a route as Romanchak looked for
Tim Vecchio in the left flat. After McGinty secured the interception, he rumbled unimpeded 33 yards to give the hosts a 28-7 lead.
Alex Probert added a pair of long field goals, hitting from 47 and 51 yards before Calvert hit Carrington Mosely for a four-yard touchdown. That capped the scoring at 41-7 with 10:46 left in the contest.
Calvert finished the game 23-of-37 for 340 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start. He hit Shells six times for 170 yards as the Flames rolled up 340 of their 412 yards through the air.
