Moon Township, Pa. – Sophomore
Dante Satcher set a pair of school records in the kick return game but it wasn't enough as the
Robert Morris University football team lost to Saint Francis U, 24-10, at Joe Walton Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was the Northeast Conference opener for both teams as the Colonials fall to 1-5 and Saint Francis evens its season mark at 3-3.
Satcher broke his own record when he took a fourth quarter kickoff from his own goal line and ran 100 yards for a touchdown. He set the record earlier this season with a 99-yard return against Alderson-Broaddus. For the game, he had a team record 173 kickoff return yards on four tries.
Sophomore
Malik Wells rushed 16 times for 61 yards for the Colonials, including a 33-yard scamper that was the longest rush for the team this season. Quarterback
Andrew Romanchak completed 8-of-16 passes for 48 yards, but was intercepted three times and was sacked four times before he exited in the third quarter.
Joe Carroll went 4-of-13 for 53 yards in relief.
Tim Vecchio hauled in six passes for 48 yards.
The Colonials defense held the Red Flash to 241 yards and just 11 first downs as they limited the visitors to 91 yards rushing and 150 yards passing. Saint Francis running back Marcus Bagley had 102 yards rushing on 25 carries. Quarterback Zack Drayer was 10-20 for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Kamron Lewis, Junior Ajayi and Bagley three times each.
A 74-yard return by Lorenzo Jerome on the opening kickoff would lead to the first points of the game for the Red Flash when Lance Geesey hit a 41-yard field goal four players later. Saint Francis would stretch the lead to 10-0 later in the quarter. Starting at their own 21, Bagley ran for 23 yards, then caught one for 25 yards to move the ball to the RMU 31 in just two plays. A 15-yard pass to Lewis was followed by a 14-yard pass from Drayer to Bagley for a touchdown with 3:01 left in the opening frame.
A kick catching penalty on Saint Francis gave RMU the ball at the Red Flash 42 to start the second quarter. Consecutive passes from Romanchak to Wells and Vecchio moved the ball to Saint Francis 25 before the drive stalled.
Connor Shennan was eventually called on and he drilled a 42-yard field goal, the second longest of his career, to trim the margin to 10-3.
Saint Francis went 59 yards on four plays on their first drive of the second half, extending its lead to 17-3 when Jerome scored on a 48-yard catch and run from Drayer. The Red Flash added seven more points when a blocked punt by Da'Jon Lee gave them the ball at the one-yard line. Drayer scored on the first play with a quarterback sneak to make it 24-3 with 11:39 to play.
Satcher took the ensuing kickoff on the left hash mark at the goal line. He started up the middle, then cut right before sprinting 100 yards for the longest kickoff return in RMU history. The play made it a two touchdown game with 11:25 showing.
Marcelis Branch finished with a team-high 10 tackles for Robert Morris.
Adam Wollet added nine stops. Freshman
Gee Stanley had a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss while
Zach Cooper chipped in with a sack and two tackles for loss.
The Colonials return to action next Saturday, Oct. 15, when they travel across Allegheny County to meet the Duquesne Dukes in a 7:00 p.m. game at Rooney Field.
