Moon Township, Pa. – Tonight's 3-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn helped the
Robert Morris University volleyball team complete the sweep of its Brooklyn opponents this weekend in the Charles L. Sewall Center.
RMU (9-12, 3-3) moves to .500 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action with the back-to-back home victories.
Sophomore outside hitter
Taylor Lord paced the offense with nine kills and two service aces, and supported the defense with 13 digs and one block assist. Senior
Arden Fisher anchored the back row with 19 digs, and added four kills, two assists, one ace and one block assist. Senior middle
Leah Dunivan tabbed five total blocks and chipped in with six kills. Junior setter
Brianna Frakes dished out 26 assists, and tallied two kills, one ace, six digs and one block.
The Colonials kicked off set three on a 4-0 run, and used their early momentum to amass a 10-3 lead, which forced LIU Brooklyn (6-12, 3-2) to call timeout. RMU maintained a lead of four points or more to the midpoint of the set, but the Blackbirds got into a rhythm late in the set and started to chip away at the Colonials advantage.
LIU Brooklyn put together a 5-1 scoring streak to reach within three points, but RMU remained determined to close out the match. Three consecutive LIU Brooklyn errors helped RMU to a 22-15 lead. The Colonials finished off the set with back-to-back kills from senior
April Krivoniak and Fisher.
Robert Morris carried its late momentum from the first set right into set two, and scored six straight points to take an 11-6 lead. LIU Brooklyn briefly led the set at 14-13, but RMU scored the next four points, which included kills from Schmid and Lord, to regain control. A kill from Fisher and an ace from Lord sparked the 4-0 run that the Colonials used to close out set two and secure a 2-0 match lead.
RMU spent most of set one trailing, but LIU Brooklyn's miscues started to catch up to the Blackbirds late in the frame. Two LIU attack errors knotted the set at 20-20 and led to two more blunders, which helped the Colonials to a 22-20 lead. The Blackbirds attempted to recover, but the RMU offense went to work. Big swings from Lord, Frakes and Dunivan earned the last three points the Colonials needed to win set one, 25-22.
Robert Morris is back in action at home this Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Big XII opponent West Virginia at 6 p.m. in the Sewall Center.
Success Under Starr

A Historic Run
Robert Morris qualified for its 17th consecutive NEC Tournament last year, extending the conference's longest active streak. In the last 17 seasons, the Colonials have posted a winning record in league play; the longest such streak of any NEC member, past or present. Over that time span, RMU has gone 157-39 in conference play.
