University Park, Pa. –
The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team remains undefeated in College Hockey America action after a 4-2 victory over Penn State Saturday afternoon in Pegula Ice Arena.
RMU (11-1-5, 6-0-1) extends its unbeaten streak to 10 games, while PSU (5-9-3, 4-2-1) moves to 0-3 in its last three outings.
Three Colonials posted multi-point efforts in the win. Junior defenseman
Katherine Murphy scored the game winner on her first goal of the season, and added an assist to match her career-high two points. Junior forward
Amanda Pantaleo recorded her second multi-point game of the season with an empty-net goal and an assist for a career-best two points. Freshman
Aneta Ledlova scored her fourth goal of the year, and dished an assist on the Pantaleo empty-netter to tab her second career multi-point outing. Redshirt junior forward
Brittany Howard extended her point streak to seven games with a third-period tally, assisted by sophomore forward
Amber Rennie. Sophomore goaltender
Lauren Bailey made 25 saves.
Two minutes into the third period, Howard battled for the puck along the boards to the left of freshman goaltender Daniela Pannicia, then skated through multiple Penn State defenders to get to the front of the net. Howard fed a centering pass to Rennie in front, whose shot bounced off of Howard and past the goalie to give the Colonials their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Murphy scored at 12:55 to give Robert Morris a two-goal edge, but less than a minute later, Penn State junior Aly Hardy responded for the Nittany Lions to bring the home team back within one. Pantaleo sealed the deal with an empty-netter on a hustle play to the puck to lift the Colonials to a 4-2 victory.
Penn State got on the board first with a power-play goal from senior alternate captain Amy Petersen to open the second period. Petersen tabbed her tenth goal of the season on a rebound that she tapped in behind the skate of Bailey to take a 1-0 lead at 5:10. True to recent trends, RMU responded quickly to knot the score, 1-1. Junior forward
Amanda Pantaleo worked the puck to the front of the net, and Ledlova caught it off a bounce and sent it over Paniccia's shoulder to net her fourth goal of the season.
RMU missed a prime, power-play, go-ahead opportunity, when a pass from Gebhard to Rennie in the slot went just wide. The Nittany Lions successfully killed off their third penalty of the period with two minutes remaining in the frame to ensure that the squads entered the second intermission still even.
Robert Morris had an abundance of good looks at the net, as they led Penn State in shots on goal, 16-5, through the first 20 minutes of action. Although the Colonials could not break through, they successfully held the Nittany Lions off the board as well, and killed off a penalty to keep the game scoreless after one period.
The rematch between the two CHA squads takes place on Sunday, Dec. 4 at noon.
