Moon Township, Pa. – On a sunny, sixty-degree day in February at Joe Walton Stadium, the
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the 2016 season by a score of 19-6 against the Manhattan College Jaspers Saturday afternoon.
Senior attack
Luke Laszkiewicz paced the Colonials (1-2) offense with his second consecutive five-point game on a season-high four goals and one assist. Senior midfielder
James Rahe recorded two goals and dished out a career-high four assists for a game-high and career-high tying six points. Freshman attack
Eddie Smith chipped in with four goals of his own to record his first collegiate points in a Colonials uniform.
RMU used a 10-1 third quarter to secure the home field victory over Manhattan (0-3), but the Colonials set the tone early, as they led 6-3 heading into the second half.
The Colonials widened the gap in the third and grew their lead to a game-best 13 points to open the final frame on a redshirt senior Eric Wales goal from freshman Shane Majewski just 3:04 into the fourth quarter. The Jaspers responded with back-to-back goals in an attempt to slow the Robert Morris roll, but the Colonials scored the final two goals of the game, with the help of Majewski who factored into both tallies, and RMU secured its first win of the year.
Robert Morris struggled in the faceoff circle last weekend against Bellarmine, but the Colonials proved that progress was made during this week's preparation for Manhattan as they won the faceoff battle with the Jaspers, 24-5. Robert Morris put a season-high 31 shots on goal, while Manhattan managed just 17.
The Colonials return to Joe Walton Stadium for the second of three consecutive home games on Saturday, Feb. 27 at noon against High Point.
