RMU Stopped Short in Battle to the Wire with Bearcats

Cincinnati, OH – A hot start and a hat trick not enough as Robert Morris University women's lacrosse drops a tight contest, 8-7 at Cincinnati.

Corey Karwacki tallied three goals and Brittany Byerly looked the role of a closer, scoring the final two goals of the game for RMU in a game that went right down to the wire.

Karwacki scored her first of the season 2:35 into the game, off a pass from Byerly. It didn't take Karwacki to net her second. Just 2:38 later, Karwacki scores unassisted, driving in from outside the circle to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.

Dana Davis kept things rolling in the Colonials best start of the season. Davis sprinted from behind the net, turned and fired home her third goal of the season, giving Robert Morris a 3-0 advantage.

The Bearcats responded less than a minute later with a goal by Courtney Curtis, following that up with a free position goal by Katie Stegmann, cutting the Colonials lead to one.
Davis pushed the lead back to two with a free position goal of her own with 16:03 to play in the first half, her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

The Bearcats scored one more before the half, a goal by Megan Bell, cutting the RMU lead to one. Cincinnati had a chance to tie the game at 4-4 with 4:30 to go in the half, but Sarah Arnold made the stop to preserve the one-goal lead.

Leading 4-3 out of the halftime break, Corey Karwacki kept the pedal down. Karwacki needed just 73 seconds to make it a 5-3 game.

The Bearcats came back with a pair of goals from Amanda Donovan to tie the game at 5 apiece. But Byerly pulled the Colonials ahead, battling through defenders around the net and tossing home her third goal of the season less than a minute later.

Cincinnati scored back to back goals to regain the lead, taking a 7-6 advantage with 11:56 to play. Brooke Kovinsky scored to tie the game at six. The Bearcats took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Curtis tallied her second of the game for the go-ahead score.

RMU threatening to score with under seven minutes remaining but Cincinnati breaks up a scoring chance and regains possession with 5:32 to play. The Bearcats push their lead to two on Kovinsky's second goal of the game. This time, a free position goal with 4:18 to play.

Robert Morris fighting hard with 41 seconds left. Davis scoops up a ground ball and the Colonials take advantage. Jessica Karwacki finds Byerly who nets her second of the game with 13 seconds remaining to bring Robert Morris within one. Davis won the draw and RMU raced up the field but to no avail.

RMU won the turnover battle in a big way, committing just 9 turnovers to Cincinnati's 16, the fewest committed by the Colonials this season. RMU outshot the Bearcats 15-14 while Sarah Arnold made six saves.
