Moving On! Colonials Win 6-3 to Advance to Semis

Robert Morris takes series over Bentley, on to Atlantic Hockey semifinals in Rochester vs. Army on Friday

Pittsburgh, Pa. - A five-goal second period sends Robert Morris University men's hockey on to the Atlantic Hockey semifinals with a 6-3 victory over Bentley, claiming the quarterfinal series win in game three.

Trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period, the Colonials responded with a pair of goals by junior Daniel Leavens to take a 2-1 lead. The first goal was all about persistence. Nearing the end of a lengthy shift that included a number of chances, Brady Ferguson's shot kicked out from Gabe Antoni's pads, but David Friedmann swatted it back between them with Daniel Leavens giving the puck the final tap into the net, tying the game at one apiece. Less than two minutes later, Ferguson won a faceoff to the right of Antoni and Leavens tucked the shot in behind the Falcons goaltender to give RMU the 2-1 lead.

The scoring stretch continued three minutes later. Greg Gibson battled along the boards for the puck and skated out to the top of the circles. Gibson sent a pass right onto the stick of Brandon Denham and the senior winger flipped a backhand pass to Friedmann who waited on the right moment to whip the puck up into the net to give the Colonials a 3-1 lead. Less than two minutes transpired before Friedmann did it again. This time a top shelf snipe for Friedmann's second tally of the night and it was 4-1 Colonials, forcing a goaltending change for the Falcons who traded Antoni for Jayson Argue.

After going 0-4 on the power play in games one and two of the series, the Colonials were finally able to cash in on the man-advantage. Wilson collected his second assist, feeding the puck up ice to Gibson who broke towards the net faked a shot and used his vision to track Zac Lynch heading towards the net on the opposite side, popping home his 24th goal of the season to make it a 5-1 Robert Morris lead.

The third period got away from the Colonials who took five penalties, giving Bentley nine shot attempts on the power play in the final frame. The Falcons cashed in on one to make it a 5-2 game but Chase Golightly put the game on ice with a power play goal of his own with 2:33 to play, with assists going to Ferguson and Friedmann. Bentley putted in a goal at the buzzer to make it a 6-3 final score.

"It was good adversity for our team to face elimination a couple of times," said Leavens. "We stuck to the process and it really showed in the second period when we took over the game."

"I think the bounces finally started going our way," said Friedmann, referring to the team's rebound from the game one defeat. "It's been our goal to get back to Rochester. That's three years in a row, we won two years ago, we know what the end goal is this year."

Robert Morris (23-10-14) will face six-seed Army West Point in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals at 5:05pm on Friday, March 18 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
