Colonials Offense Stymied in Loss at Detroit

Titans goaltender makes the difference as RMU outshoots Detroit

Detroit, Mich. – Robert Morris University women's lacrosse falls in a tightly contested game against the University of Detroit by a final score of 5-4 on Friday afternoon.

Two goals in the first four minutes put the Colonials in good position to start. Katie Breeze picked up a ground ball and fired it home to give RMU a 1-0 advantage with her sixth goal of the season. Brittany Byerly scored the second goal of the game by knocking in a loose ball in front of the net. Byerly leads all Colonials scorers with 15 goals through seven games played.

Detroit freshman and leading scorer Kaitlyn Wandelt scored to cut the Colonials lead to one. The Titans tied the game at two with 7:42 to play in the first on Morgan Girardi's fifteenth goal of the season.

Robert Morris pulled ahead before halftime with Dana Davis' tenth goal of the season, after the sophomore deked a defender and drove to the net.
The first half was heavy on turnovers with RMU committing 14 to Detroit's 13, with each team causing eight. The Colonials dominated the draw controls winning all six of the first half's draws.



Detroit struck first in the second half, scoring two goals in the first 5:32. Kylie Birney scored on a free position shot to know the game at three. Kelsi Pritchard passed to Lexie Kinmond for the goal to give the Titans their first lead of the game, 4-3.

The Colonials had a chance to tie the game with 13:00 remaining. Bailey Skubon caused a turnover and maintained possession and a few moments later, Byerly had her shot saved by Titans goalkeeper Allison McDonough who made 12 saves in a game-changing performance for Detroit. Robert Morris outshot the Titans 16-14. Skubon caused five turnovers in a solid defenseive effort for the Colonials. Those five caused turnovers are tied for second all-time in a game by an RMU player. 

On the ensuing possession, the Titans increased their lead to two with Kinmond's second goal of the game on a free position shot to put Detroit up 5-3.

The Colonials cut that two-goal lead to one with 3:21 to play. Davis nets her second of the game on a free position shot, her eleventh goal of the season, to bring RMU within one. The Colonials couldn't find the equalizer in the closing minutes.
