Colonials Snap Bryant Win Streak With Strong Finish

Robert Morris in three-way tie for first place in conference

Smithfield, R.I. – Robert Morris University women's lacrosse notched its third win in Northeast Conference play, ending Bryant University's seven-game winning streak with a 10-7 road victory.

Jessica Karwacki led the Colonials with three goals and an assist, to go with six draw controls. Corey Karwacki posted a goal and three assists for a four-point game of her own, while Dana Davis and Emily Jamison each notched a pair of goals. Niki Grillon and Katie Breeze rounded out the scoring, with Grillon scoring one of the Colonials three man-up goals.

Bryant jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the first half. Lauren Britton darted down the field after the opening draw and fired the ball into the net just eleven seconds into the game to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Caitlin Brown made it 2-0 with a goal at the 28:13 mark.

The Colonials responded quickly with Davis' first goal of the game. Within two minutes, Robert Morris evened the score when Corey Karwacki tossed a pass to Emily Jamison who scored her 17th goal of the year to knot the game at two. The teams traded scores including man-up goals. The Colonials score with the extra attacker came on a pass from Jessica Karwacki to Corey Karwacki, who netted her 17th goal of the season to tie the game at four.

Davis opened the second half with a goal twenty-five seconds in, her nineteenth of the season, giving the Colonials their first lead of the game. Bryant scored to once again tie the game but Jessica Karwacki fired home back-to-back goals to complete her hat trick and put Robert Morris ahead for good. Karwacki's pair launched a five-goal outburst that sealed the victory. Grillon, Breeze and Jamison scored with Grillon and Jamison's goals coming with an extra attacker. The Bulldogs tossed in two goals in the final 1:40 but until that point, the Colonials defense allowed just one second half goal, standing tall in front of goalkeeper Sarah Arnold who recorded a pair of saves and a ground ball in the win.

Robert Morris responded to Friday's defeat at Central Connecticut, handing preseason conference-favorite Bryant its first conference loss of the season, ending a 7-game winning streak.

"We just went into the game with a completely different mentality than Friday," said Head Coach Katy Phillips after the game. "We knew what we had to do on offense to beat their pressure and we stuck to the plan."

"Our team mentality was to have constant touches on the ball, continue to wear their defense down with our passing game," said Phillips.

"I think we took four or five shots during the man up situation and that takes a toll mentally and physically," Phillips said. "I think we were able to build up momentum there to ride out the rest of the half."

The win pulls Robert Morris (7-6 overall, 3-1 NEC) into a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings. Bryant and Wagner are the other teams with 3-1 records. Mount St. Mary's, Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut are all 2-2 in conference play.

"I think that's a testament to our conference," said Phillips, looking for a return trip to the conference tournament. "There are no guaranteed wins."

Robert Morris is back in action for one game this week on Friday at Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa. The Red Flash are 1-3 in the NEC with a 4-9 overall record.

"We need to prepare mentally and physically to bring our best game against Saint Francis," said Phillips. "We need to make sure our strategy is there and the team executes it, to work towards earning that postseason berth."
