Colonials Fall in OT in First-Place Clash With Wagner

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team battled to overtime in a first-place clash with Wagner College but fell to the Seahawks 10-9.

Corey Karwacki led the Colonials attack scoring five points on two goals and three assists while also picking up a pair of ground balls. Dana Davis also scored two goals and racked up 14 shots, all while gathering five ground balls, four draw controls and causing four turnovers. Katie Breeze scored twice as well as causing two turnovers and notching a ground ball and a draw control. Jessica Karwacki scored a goal, picked up two ground balls and won four draws, adding to her NCAA all-time record of 638 draw controls.

Wagner scored first but the Colonials answered with three consecutive goals. Breeze, Corey Karwacki and Davis put Robert Morris ahead 3-1 with 21:23 left in the first half. Wagner responded with a three goal stretch of their own to take a 4-3 lead with 4:55 to play before the half. Emily Jamison buried a Corey Karwacki pass to knot the game at four apiece.

Davis put RMU up 5-4 early in the second half. Wagner continued the back and forth affair with back to back goals, going up 6-5. Corey Karwacki tallied her third assist with a pass to Kerri Sayrafe who tied the game 6-6 with 21:25 to play. Wagner took a 9-7 lead on Shea Gegan's third goal of the game with 11:37 remaining. Jessica Karwacki scored on a free position shot to cut the Seahawks lead to one. Sophia Eureka applied pressure to the Seahawks goaltender who had the ball with roughly four minutes to play and forced a pass that was picked off by Breeze and she raced up the field to score her second of the game, tying the score 9-9.

In overtime, the Colonials had a scoring chance on a shot by Davis that resulted in one of Katie Ferraro's nine saves. The Seahawks cashed in on a man-up opportunity when Gegan passed to Olivia Streilein right in front of the net and she scored from point blank for the win.

Robert Morris' defense had a strong effort. Megan Gold battled for four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Micah Brown had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, Megan Wolfgang had a ground ball and two caused turnovers, and Maggie Stella had two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Davis set an RMU record with 14 shots in the game. Corey Karwacki's two goals pushed her to fourth all-time at Robert Morris with 104 career goals.

The Colonials are tied for third in the Northeastern Conference with Sacred Heart and hold the tiebreaker over the Pioneers when it comes to seeding for the postseason tournament. Wagner moves into a tie with Bryant atop the NEC standings where the Bulldogs hold the tiebreaker. Wagner and Bryant are the only teams to have clinched a spot in the NEC tournament. Robert Morris will clinch with a win against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. The Colonials senior day ceremony will take place prior to Sunday's 1:00pm game against The Mount at Joe Walton Stadium.
