Colonials Clinch NEC Tourney Bid With Senior Day Win

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team clinched a spot in the Northeast Conference tournament with an 8-6 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day. The Colonials will be the third seed in the NEC tournament. Top-seed Bryant will host the postseason tournament in Smithfield, Rhode Island, facing four-seed Sacred Heart in the semifinals on Friday, May 6. Robert Morris will take on the two-seed Wagner on the same date in a rematch of Friday's game which the Seahawks won 10-9 in overtime. 

Dana Davis (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led the Colonials with four goals and scored the first three goals of the game in the first 5:49 of play. Molly Morris responded for the Mountaineers before another pair of Robert Morris shots found the back of the net. Emily Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) opened the two-goal burst with her 24th tally of the season. Davis followed up with her fourth of the game and 25th of the season.

Robert Morris held a 5-1 lead at halftime. Corey Karwacki (Sparks, Md./Hereford) scored the first of her three goals less than two minutes into the second frame, putting the Colonials ahead 6-1. Mount St. Mary's mounted a rally, rattling off four consecutive goals to close the five-goal Colonials lead to just one. Karwacki scored a pair of goals thirty-two seconds apart to increase the Robert Morris lead to three, running her season total to 24 goals
. The Mountaineers chipped away with one more goal, but not enough to catch the Colonials who held on for the 8-6 win.

Robert Morris dominated the shots 26-13 and shots on goal 21-9. The Colonials won 11 of the 16 draw controls and collected 16 ground balls. Robert Morris committed just 11 turnovers while causing 12. 

Megan Wolfgang had three ground balls and caused 3 turnovers. Katie Breeze collected two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Jessica Karwacki won four draw controls while also picking up two ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers. Micah Brown caused two turnovers while also nabbing a ground ball. Maggie Stella had a caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

The victory by the Colonials marked the 37th win that the Robert Morris senior class has been a part of, the most by any class in program history, surpassing the Class of 2015's 36 wins. Jessica Karwacki's NCAA record for career draw controls is currently at the 641 mark. Emily Jamison and Corey Karwacki sit third and fourth all-time at Robert Morris with 108 and 107 goals, respectively.

Robert Morris wraps up the regular season with a 9-7 record, going 5-2 in conference play. The Colonials have finished the regular season .500 or better in each year that the four-year seniors Micah Brown, Brittany Byerly, Emily Jamison, Corey Karwacki and Jessica Karwacki have been at Robert Morris, the first such stretch for Head Coach Katy Phillips and her team.

The NEC tournament begins with the awards banquet Thursday evening and semifinals begin between Robert Morris and Wagner, and Bryant and Sacred Heart on Friday at a time to be determined.
