Colonials Open NEC Play with 13-9 Win

Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse opened Northeast Conference play with a 13-9 victory over LIU Brooklyn.

It was a back and forth battle in the first seven minutes of the game. Corey Karwacki scored two goals for the Colonials, keeping the game knotted 2-2 in the first half. A free position goal by Jessica Karwacki gave the Colonials their first lead of the game with 19:03 remaining in the first.

LIU Brooklyn tied the game 3-3 on a man up goal two minutes later. Odd-man situations would be the story of the rest of the first half with a total of six yellow cards issued to both teams. The Colonials scored back to back man up goals thirty seconds apart to take a two-goal lead. Emily Jamison scored the first with an assist by Dana Davis. Katie Breeze scored the second off a pass from Kerri Sayrafe.

The freshman Sayrafe pushed the Robert Morris lead to three with a goal of her own with 7:43 to play in the half. LIU Brooklyn closed the gap to two and could have cut the game closer in a man up scenario, but the Colonials fought for possession and killed the entire two-minute penalty, with Maggie Stella scoring a man down goal with 3:24 remaining in the half.

Robert Morris led 7-4 at halftime and took an 8-4 lead early in the second half on Jessica Karwacki's second goal of the game. LIU Brooklyn scored back to back goals to cut the RMU lead to two. Davis scored her sixteenth goal of the season to give the Colonials a 9-6 lead. Shortly after winning a draw, Jessica Karwacki took a Blackbirds turnover and raced it through defenders, the length of the field and completed her hat trick to put Robert Morris out front 10-6.

LIU Brooklyn cut the lead to three but not for long. Davis scored her second of the game, unassisted, on a high shot past the goalkeeper to make it an 11-7 game. The Blackbirds cut the gap to three with a man up goal with less than eight minutes to play and Becky Schoenecker replaced Sarah Arnold in goal at the 7:29 mark following the goal. LIU Brooklyn scored less than a minute later to come within two, but Jessica Karwacki scored her season-high fourth goal of the game less than a minute after that to put the Colonials back on top by three. Maggie Stella cut from behind the net and across the front, firing home her second goal of the game to make it 13-9 with 4:40 to play.

The Blackbirds brought the offensive pressure in the final four minutes but the Colonials defense fought off the attack in front of the net. Schoenecker made a pair of big saves in the closing minutes, including one at the buzzer, to keep the Blackbirds off the board for the final six and a half minutes of the game.

Karwacki won 12 draw controls to go with her four goal performance as the Colonials doubled up on draws 16-8. The Colonials caused seven turnovers, two by Dana Davis, and held themselves to 14 fouls while the Blackbirds committed 31. RMU dominated shots on goal 25-12 but Blackbirds goalkeeper Virginia Gibbons made 12 saves to thwart the Colonials efforts.

Robert Morris (5-5, 1-0 NEC) is in action Sunday, April 10 at 3:00pm at Joe Walton Stadium to face a second NEC opponent at home this weekend, Sacred Heart.
