Robert Morris Wins Thriller Over Sacred Heart

Moon Township, Pa. – Robert Morris University women's lacrosse swept a two-game home weekend to open Northeastern Conference play with a thrilling 6-5 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.

Sacred Heart started the game on a 3-0 run before Jessica Karwacki put the Colonials on the board with a free position goal, her 17th goal of the season. The Pioneers answered to take a 4-1 lead but the Colonials answered with four straight goals to tie the game 5-4 with 7:11 remaining in the first. Dana Davis netted her 18th goal of the season, taking over the team scoring lead. Freshman Maggie Stella battled for a ground ball up the field towards the net and batted it home for her sixth goal of the season. Jessica Karwacki completed her hat trick with a pair of goals just nine seconds apart to give the Colonials their first lead of the game. Robert Morris carried that 5-4 lead into the half.

Sacred Heart drove to the net quickly in the second half but freshman goalkeeper Sarah Arnold was able to make the save on a Pioneers free position shot and work to clear the ball out to Stella. Sacred Heart tied the game at 5-5 with a man up goal 6:08 into the half. Arnold made another save on a Pioneers free position shot with less than 19 minutes to play to keep the score knotted at five.

The Pioneers held the ball with under nine minutes to play and the Colonials defense held Sacred Heart in check, not allowing them to score. Micah Brown, Kendall Noel, Bailey Skubon, Megan Gold, Stella and Davis were all part of that defensive effort that eventually led to the Colonials game-winning goal.

With 49 seconds left and the game tied 5-5, Corey Karwacki passed to Emily Jamison (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) who fired in the game-winning goal.

"We talked about needing all 27 players going into conference play, to win games. Everyone needed to contribute," said Head Coach Katy Phillips. "I think you saw in that defensive stand, we had a lot of caused turnovers. We didn't always get the ball, but we never let down and that was a huge momentum builder that led to us getting the ball into the box on the other end."

Robert Morris moves above .500 for the first time this season, taking a 6-5 overall record and 2-0 record in the NEC into next weekend's road trip to Central Connecticut State and Bryant.
