Geneva, N.Y. – The Statesmen of Hobart outscored the
Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team, 10-4, in the second half and claimed victory over the Colonials, 16-10, Saturday afternoon at Boswell Field in Geneva, N. Y.
The Colonials (4-7, 2-2) dropped their second consecutive Northeast Conference contest, while the Statesmen (6-5, 2-1) earned their second league victory of the season.
Seven different Colonials posted points in the loss, and three of them recorded a total of three points each. Senior midfield
James Rahe led the charge with three goals in the second half. Senior attack
Luke Laszkiewicz scored twice and dished one assist, and picked up three groundballs. Junior midfield
Alexander Bohl tabbed three points on one goal and two helpers.
The two NEC squads entered the second half tied, 6-6, and the Statesmen began to pull away with a 4-1 run to open the third quarter. Rahe slowed the Statesmen offense when he scored a man-up goal with 2:18 remaining in the frame, but 10 seconds later, Hobart senior captain midfield Cooper Stefaniak responded and extended the home team lead to three goals.
Hobart opened the scoring in the fourth quarter to go ahead, 12-8, but once again, Rahe responded with a timely goal for the Colonials in an effort to spark some late momentum. The Statesmen, however, stopped the Colonials short of controlling the final minutes of action and scored three straight to earn its largest lead of the game, 15-9.
Sophomore Connor Yepsen scored his second goal of the season to reduce the Hobart lead to five, but the Statesmen held off the Colonials in the final 3:32 of the game and padded their lead with one more goal before the clock hit zero with the home team in front.
The Colonials led, 3-2, after the first quarter, and led by as many as three goals in the middle of the second, but the Statesmen took control in the latter half of the game and came away with the win.
RMU takes a break from NEC action next weekend and concludes its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, April 19 under the lights versus Canisius at 7 p.m. in Buffalo, N.Y.
