Robert Morris Falls at #20 Youngstown State

Youngstown, Ohio – The Robert Morris University football team suffered a 38-6 loss to the 20th-ranked Youngstown State Penguins at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown, Ohio, Saturday evening. The Colonials return to action next Saturday, Sept. 24, when they host the Malone Pioneers at 7:00 p.m. at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Penguins scored on their first drive of the game utilizing a pair of chunk plays to break through the Colonials defense. The first was a 35-yard heave from Trent Hosick to Kevin Rader. Two plays later, Hosick found Martin Ruiz and he rumbled 21 yards down the right side for the score 3:46 after kickoff.

Their second touchdown was of the quick strike variety, Tevin McCaster rushing 21 yards to the Colonials 29-yard line before a 15-yard penalty on the Colonials moved the ball to the 14. The next snap ended with Ruiz running into the end zone with 4:50 to go in the opening quarter.

For the second straight week, weather played a role and the teams were forced to leave the field for over an hour until the inclement weather cleared. The Penguins added a 37-yard field goal by Zak Kennedy midway through the second quarter to cap off a nine-play, 39-yard drive.

Youngstown State increased its margin to 24-0 on a fourth-and-three play, drawing the Colonials in with a jumbo package before dropping the ball over the top as Hosick hit Rader for 27 yards.

The Colonials struck back with 3:06 left in the third quarter after an 18-yard punt return by Warren Robinson set RMU up at their own 48. Sam Woods took the hand-off on what looked like a jet-sweep right, but the junior pulled up and rifled a spiral downfield to Eldin Anu for a 52-yard score.

On the next play from scrimmage, though, Ruiz went around the right side 80-yards and Youngstown State was back on top, 31-6. The Penguins finished off the game's scoring with 10:13 left to play when Tevin McCaster carried 19 yards around the left side.

Andrew Romanchak finished 9-of-23 for 66 sacks at quarterback. His favorite target on the night was Reggie Green who caught three passes for 20 yards. Time Vecchio and Warren Robinson each had two catches in addition to Anu's touchdown reception.

Zach Cooper and Adam Wollet tied for team-high honors with nine tackles and Ryan Richards, Jr., added eight. Wollet and Richards each had a sack as did Gee Stanley. Adam Check was called upon to punt a team record 12 times for a 455 yards, also a team record.

Ruiz had 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Hosick went 6-of-12 for 112 yards and a pair of scores as well. The Penguins finished with 431 yards of offense.
