Colonials Stymied by Sacred Heart to Close Homestand

Sydney Bruckner stopped seven Sacred Heart shots in the defeat

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University women's soccer team fell to Sacred Heart University, 1-0, this afternoon in Northeast Conference (NEC) action from the North Athletic Complex.

A goal in the 35th minute was the difference in both teams' second NEC matchup as Sacred Heart (4-8-0, 1-1-0 NEC) managed to convert on one of its seven corner kicks.

Robert Morris (2-9-0, 0-2-0 NEC) generated a pair of shots over the opening 10 minutes as Greer Monahan and Kasia Bak each tested Pioneers goalkeeper Nicole Sambuco. SHU responded with a pair of shots that Bruckner stopped and a header wide of the netting, as the visitors began to seize some momentum.

The Pioneers netted the game-winner with 10 minutes remaining in the first half as Alyssa Hyland's corner kick found the head of Alex Mesropyan at the far left post.

RMU almost answered in the 43rd minute as Erin Ritzer played a pass over the top of the backline to Jane Schleicher, but the junior forward's volley found the wrong side of the right post.

Monahan and Bak again forced Sambuco into saves early in the second half as the Colonials searched for an equalizer. Kristina Kelley also tried to break through in the 75th minute, but her shot was stopped to preserve the shutout.

Sydney Bruckner made seven saves in the defeat.

Robert Morris begins a three-match road swing on Sunday, Oct. 8 when it travels to Keystone State rival Saint Francis U.
