Robert Morris Powers Past AIC

Senior Robert Powers scores his first career goal, one of two power play goals in RMU's win over AIC

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Career achievement unlocked for senior defenseman Robert Powers, setting the stage for Robert Morris University men's hockey to pick up its fourth win of the season, 3-1 over American International College at Colonials Arena Friday night.

Senior forward Spencer Dorowicz posted his first career two-goal game, including the eventual game-winner, to lead the Colonials to victory for the third time this season on home ice.

The victory for RMU snaps a three-game winning streak for the Yellow Jackets.

Midway through the first period with RMU on a power play, goaltender Francis Marotte brought the puck out from behind the net and passed it up to Powers who skipped the puck through the crease and into the goal. The first career goal for Powers comes in his 55th career game, collecting his third point of the season and sixth of his career.

With a 1-0 lead headed into the second, the Colonials made it 2-for-2 on the man advantage. Just 20 seconds into RMU's second power play opportunity of the game, Powers picked up his second point of the night, passing to Luke Lynch who found Dorowicz who knocked in his fourth goal of the season to make it 2-0 Robert Morris.

RMU out-shot AIC 22-17 through two periods, but the Yellow Jackets brought their best effort in the third, outshooting RMU 14-4, starting with an even strength goal by Blake Christiansen just 2:13 into the period to cut the Colonials lead to one.

But with less than three minutes to play, the Robert Morris line of Dorowicz, Lynch and Timmy Moore put the Jackets away for good with Dorowicz's second goal of the night to cap the scoring at 3-1.

Marotte (4-4-1) made 30 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season, including a reaching toe save in the third period. The sophomore Marotte stopped 13 of 14 shots in the final frame, three as AIC brought on an extra attacked for the final 1:20, sealing the win.

Junior Eric Israel had perhaps his best defensive performance of the year, finishing the game with five blocks with one coming in the final minute of play. The Colonials as a whole blocked 19 shots, with Alex Bontje, Sean Giles, Timmy Moore, Michael Louria and Brady Ferguson each chipping in two.

Robert Morris was two-for-four on the power play and two-for-two on the penalty kill, including an important kill in the third period to prevent AIC from tying the game.

The night was a milestone one for a pair of seniors, marking the first career two-goal game for Dorowicz and first career two-point game for Powers.

"It feels good to get the monkey off my back," said a relieved Powers after the game. "It feels even better to get two power play goals. That's big for our unit. And to have a solid win like that is a really big thing for us."

"I'm playing with some awesome players," said Dorowicz, who now has seven points in his last five games. "When you're playing with guys like Mike (Louria) who I played with, Grahamer (Matthew Graham) before he got hurt, and now Timmy "tip-in" Moore and Luke "the cannonball" Lynch, you're going to get some chances. I'm just surrounded by good players and right now, it's feeling good, just keep shooting it on net."

Robert Morris (4-7-1, 4-5-1 AHC) returns to action Saturday for a 4:05pm puck drop versus AIC. It's the Colonials first ever Arctic Foxes night where the local youth hockey organization will be in attendance and participating in several activities. A postgame autograph session will be available to those who bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the West Hills Food Pantry. It's also a "Toys for Tots" game, where fans who bring a new, unwrapped toy will receive free admission to the game.
