Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Colonials Shut Out 3-0 By Bentley

First time RMU has been shut out at home in more than two years

Pittsburgh, Pa. - On a night where a puck shattered a light fixture over the ice at 84 Lumber Arena, Bentley University goaltender Aidan Pelino played lights out as the Robert Morris University men's hockey team was shut out 3-0.

The loss marks the first time since January 10, 2015, that the Colonials have been shut out at home. That game was a 1-0 loss to Bentley, with then freshman (current junior) Jayson Argue in goal.

The Falcons scored twice in the span of 66 seconds in the second period and never trailed. Drew Callin scored the first of the game at the 5:03 mark of the second, following a Falcons faceoff win. The second goal came at the 6:09 mark with Chris Buchanan rifling a shot from the blue line that found its way to the back of the net.

Bentley took a 2-0 lead into the third and the Colonials held them off the board until Callin potted an empty net goal for his second tally of the game.

Robert Morris started the game outshooting Bentley 8-3 in the first seven and a half minutes, all at even strength. The Colonials were held to just two shots in the remainder of the first. RMU was 0-for-2 on the power play in the first and 0-for-3 on the night, only getting one other opportunity on the man-advantage, registering four shots during a power play in the second. Bentley and Robert Morris ended up even in shots 28-28.

"It's a bit of an unfortunate theme going on with us losing the first game on Friday and then coming back on Saturday and winning it," said junior defenseman Alex Bontje. "When it came down to it, we just got outplayed tonight."

"For three straight Fridays at home, we've been outworked," said head coach Derek Schooley. "It's frustrating. I'm kind of at a loss. We just haven't been able to put together a weekend, back-to-back, in a long time."

"We keep putting ourselves in a must-win game and sooner or later, we're going to get bit," Schooley continued. "Sooner or later a hot goalie or a bounce is going to happen where you don't get the result on the second night after you've thrown away the first night."

Schooley did call junior forward Timmy Moore the best player on the ice Friday night for the Colonials. Moore, who led RMU with five shots on goal, had perhaps two of the team's best scoring chances dashed by Bentley's Pelino.

Robert Morris (16-10-3, 12-9-2 AHC) remains in third place in the Atlantic Hockey standings but is now tied with Army West Point and Holy Cross, each team with 26 points. Bentley comes into Saturday's rematch tied for seventh but trails RMU by just four points in the standings. Just four points separate the middle six teams in the conference standings, with Canisius and Air Force ahead of the pack in first and second. The Colonials and Falcons square off on Saturday at 5:05pm following the women's hockey game against RIT at 1:05pm. Tickets for each game are sold separately.
