Charlotte, N.C. – The
Robert Morris University softball team split a set of games at the Charlotte Green & White Invitational at Phillips Softball Complex in Charlotte, N.C. The Colonials opened the day with a 3-1 victory against Fairfield before suffering an 11-0 loss to the host 49ers in game two. The results put the Colonials record at 2-9 on the year.
In the day's first contest,
Taryn Miller went 2-for-3 with a double, one run batted in (RBI) and a run scored.
Briana Bunner went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI while
Jordan Gurganus collected two hits in four at bats.
Angelina McGuire hit a leadoff homerun to give Fairfield (0-1) a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That, however, would be the only time the Stags would get on the board.
Madison Riggle would allow two more hits in the second inning before settling down. The freshman finished with a pair of strikeouts and allowed just seven hits and only three over the final five innings of play. It's her second win and second complete game of the season.
Katie Isenberg led off the second inning with a single to left field. Two batters later, Miller rifled a shot into left center for a double that scored Isenberg and tied the game.
In the third, Gurganus beat out an infield single before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Stacey Capp and advancing to third on a ground out. Bunner then singled to score Gurganus. Miller started the action in the fourth inning with a one-out single before moving to second on an error. When
Ashlee Groover doubled down the left field line, Miller was able to score and RMU held a 3-1 lead.
Charlotte (9-3) hurler Haley Wiseman did not allow a runner and struck out eight in five innings of work in the day's second game. She improves to 6-2. Sophomore
Laura Coulter took the loss for Robert Morris lasting 1.2 innings after giving up seven runs and six hits.
Lacee Collins pitched 2.1 innings and was charged with four runs and five hits as the Colonials fell, 11-0.
Charlotte's Emma Ocker tallied three RBI and went 2-of-3 with two runs scored. Haley Pace belted a two-run homer in the second inning and was 3-of-3 with two runs scored. Meredith Harris added a pair of hits as well. The 49ers scored three in the first and third innings, four in the second and added another in the fourth inning.
Robert Morris continues play at the Green & White Invitational Saturday, Feb. 25, when they take on La Salle in a 10:00 a.m. game. After that, match-ups will be determined by record with at least one more game making the Colonials slate on Saturday.
