Pair of Games Go Against Robert Morris

Charlotte, N.C. – The Robert Morris University softball team lost a pair of games at the Charlotte Green & White Tournament Saturday at Phillips Softball Complex. The Colonials, now 2-11, lost to La Salle, 7-5, and host Charlotte, 18-3.

Abrielle McCartney collected four runs batted in (RBI) as she hit a pair of home runs, the first of her career. Jordan Gurganus went 5-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and a double. Katie Isenberg hat three hits in five at bats, driving in one and hitting a double. Stacey Capp and Olivia Lorusso also had two hits on the day.

In the team's first game, La Salle (3-0) took advantage of control issues from RMU starter Lacee Collins. Collins hit two batters and threw four wild pitches allowing the Explorers to score three runs without putting a ball in play. Coulter came in to put out the fire, replacing the RMU starter after four batters.

In the third inning, Valerie Pineiro scored on a passed ball and a Suzanne Swanicke sacrifice fly allowed La Salle to push the lead to 5-0. The Explorers tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Robert Morris started to mount a comeback in the fifth inning when Lorusso drove in Gurganus with a double to right center. Two innings later, Briana Bunner scored Gurganus with a groundball. Katie Isenberg followed with a double that plated Lorusso, cutting the lead to 7-3. McCartney then ripped a two-run bomb over the left center field fence, her first of the season bringing in Isenberg. That was as close as the Colonials would get however, falling to the Explorers, 7-5.

Gurganus, Stacey Capp, Lorusso and Isenberg all collected two hits in the game.

Charlotte (11-4) scored early and often in game two, a single and a wild pitch scoring runs in the first inning. The 49ers put seven on the board in the second inning with six hits and added six more in the third inning with six more hits to extend the lead to 15-0.

In the fourth, Isenberg came home after her single when McCartney drove her second home run of the day to left center. Charlotte pushed the margin to 18-2 with three more runs in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Lorusso in the top of the fifth inning drove in Gurganus, but it wasn't enough to keep the mercy rule from going into effect.

Gurganus was 3-of-3 in the game with Isenberg and McCartney each picking up hits.

Madison Riggle took the loss as she was charged with eight earned in 1.1 innings. Collins gave up four earned runs in an inning of work while Coulter pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four earned runs.

Robert Morris finishes play at the tournament when they take on Fairfield at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, February 26.
