Leavens Hits 100 as Colonials Clinch Home Ice

Lewiston, NY - Robert Morris University men's hockey started an eventful final weekend of the regular season with a 6-2 win over Niagara University.

Senior forward Daniel Leavens reached the 100 career points milestone with a goal and two assists. Junior forward Brady Ferguson posted a four-point night with a goal and three assists. Sophomore forward Alex Tonge tied a single-season RMU program record with his tenth power play goal of the year (Chris Margott 2008-09).

The Colonials took a 2-1 lead out of the first period. Junior forward Timmy Moore scored his 15th goal of the season, patiently working the puck around the net before snapping the shot home. Freshmen Daniel Mantenuto and Luke Lynch earned assists on the play and RMU took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game. Niagara answered to tie the game but with just 4.9 seconds on the clock, Ferguson taking a feed from Leavens and burying a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1 RMU.

In the second period, Tonge and Leavens scored back to back power play goals to put the Colonials ahead 4-2. Ferguson and Leavens assisted on Tonge's goal, putting Leavens one point away from 100 and earning Tonge his 10th power play goal this season (16G, 22A). Leavens scored a goal for his 100th career point at the 10:04 mark of the second, taking a pass from Ferguson and flipping it past Niagara goalie Jackson Teichrob. Leavens surpassed 2016 graduate Brandon Denham (98 points) to become the program's tenth all-time leading scorer and tenth player to reach 100 career points.

Niagara's Derek Brown pushed one past goaltender Dalton Izyk and bodies came crashing into the net less than  eight minutes left in the second.

Robert Morris tallied its third power play goal of the game with less than eight minutes to go in the game. After Ferguson won a faceoff, Moore powered up the ice and dished a pass to sophomore defenseman Eric Israel who picked up his eighth goal of the season to make it a 5-2 RMU lead. Just 76 seconds later, senior forward Ben Robillard put the game away for good, taking a puck that came trailing through Teichrob's pads and scraping it into the net for his 11th career goal, fifth of the season and in back to back games.

Izyk backstopped the Colonials making 17 saves as RMU outshot Niagara 39-19 and posessed the puck throughout much of the game. The Colonials went 3-for-9 on the power play and the penalty kill went 3-for-4.

Robert Morris (18-11-4, 14-10-3 AHC) secured a home ice advantage and #4 overall seed for the Atlantic Hockey postseason tournament. The Colonials will face #5 Holy Cross in a best of three series in Pittsburgh from March 10-12.
