Charlotte, N.C. – The
Robert Morris University softball team finished off the Charlotte Green & White Tournament with an 11-10 eight-inning comeback victory against Fairfield Sunday morning. It was the Colonials (3-11) second win in three days against the Stags (0-5).
Stacey Capp went 4-for-6 and drove in the game-winning run in extra innings. It was the first four-hit game for Capp and the 24th in team history. She had two runs batted in and hit her third double of the season.
Jordan Gurganus went 3-for-6 and
Kristen Pray tacked on two hits, two runs and two RBI to go along with a pair of walks.
Trailing 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh,
Olivia Lorusso started the inning by reaching on an error. Another error on
Abrielle McCartney's ground ball gave the Colonials two on with no outs. Lorusso cut it to one run when she scored on the Stags second wild pitch of the inning.
Briana Bunner then laced a double to right center, scoring McCartney and tying the game, 10-10.
Fairfield was unable to score with the international tiebreaker rule in their half of the eighth while Pray walked to start the Colonials half of the inning to put runners on first and second. Gurganus hit into a fielder's choice and
Taylor Bartlow was forced out at third. Capp then came to the plate and ripped her fourth hit of the day, a single, between the short stop and thirdbaseman to drive in Pray from second and lift the Colonials to the victory.
Laura Coulter, who started her day at first base, earned the victory allowing just two hits and one earned run in four innings of relief work.
Madison Riggle started the game and was pulled after being touched up for nine hits and seven earned runs over 3.2 innings.
The Stags got on the board in the top of the first as back-to-back singles by Tori Reed and Lacee Olaff drove in Alisha Marshall who walked to start the inning.
The Colonials got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Capp and Lorusso each singled. A walk to
Katie Isenberg followed by a Stags error allowed Capp to come home. Fairfield answered in the top of the second when Gianna Kinhofer singled and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Robert Morris strung together five hits, four of them singles, in their half of the second to surge ahead, 4-2. Pray and Gurganus collected one-out singles and Pray advanced to third. A double-steal plated Pray. Capp then smoked a double down the left field line, driving in Gurganus, and would later score when McCartney hit a line-drive single to center field.
The Stags struck back in a big way in the fourth inning, scoring five runs with two outs to surge ahead, 8-4. Marshall doubled in one run, then Amanda Ulzheimer pushed two across with a single. Olaff doubled in two more runs before
Lacee Collins came in for Riggle to get the final out. The Stags added another in the fifth inning.
Gurganus drove in Coulter in the bottom of the fifth cutting the lead to four runs. Lorusso was hit by a pitch to leadoff the sixth inning and
Katie Isenberg suffered the same fate two batters later. With one out, Bunner grounded to short stop, but a throwing error allowed her to reach safely and Lorusso scored. A walk to pinch hitter
Taryn Miller loaded to bases and Pray took advantage with a single to center that scored two runs, bringing the Colonials to within one run, 9-8. The Stags pushed the lead to 10-8 in the top of the seventh.
