Moon Township, Pa. – Freshman
Natalie Higgins hit her first career home run and
Kaitlin Ellzy made her first start of the season, but the day would end with the
Robert Morris University softball team on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision against UNC Wilmington Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Colonials to 3-12 on the year while the Seahawks improve to 10-4-1.
Ellzy got the start after missing the first 14 games of the year with an injury. She went 3.2 innings, giving up just one hit and one run before exiting in the fourth inning.
Laura Coulter took over from there, taking the hard luck loss after allowing just five hits and two earned runs in 6.2 innings. Sara Davis got the win for the Seahawks, pitching just one inning. Peyton Jordan did the yeoman's work throwing 10 innings. She was charged with two runs, one earned, while striking out seven.
Jordan Gurganus was 3-for-6 at the plate.
Kristen Pray went 2-for-4 on the day and drew a walk. Higgins first homer was a solo bomb in the fourth inning.
UNCW took the lead in the third inning, a single by Nella Chamblee pushing Rachel Willis across the plate. Higgins made the lead short-lived when she sent a shot over the left field wall in the top of the fourth inning. That's where the score remained until the 10th inning.
In that 10th inning,
Briana Bunner doubled to right field to score
Katie Isenberg who was on first base after reaching on a fielder's choice. Again, the opponent had an immediate answer. This time it was Merritt Wilkinson for the Seahawks who led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to left field.
The Seahawks got the difference maker in the 11th inning. A bunt single by Kelsey Bryan put a runner on with one out. Willis followed with a double that allowed Bryan to come around for the gamewinning run and end the contest, 3-2.
The Colonials travel to Conway, S.C., for a 2:00 p.m. game against Coastal Carolina tomorrow, Thursday, March 9.
