RMU Drops 4-1 Contest to RIT

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's hockey team dropped a 4-1 contest against RIT Friday night at 84 Lumber Arena. Sophomore forward Alex Tonge scored the lone goal of the game for the Colonials, tipping in a shot by sophomore defenseman Eric Israel.

The Colonials outshot the Tigers 17-7 in the first period but were unable to find the back of the net. RIT forward Abbott Girduckis, brother of future Colonial Aidan Girduckis (defenseman NLI signee), scored a goal in the first period and added another in the third, helping the Tigers to the 4-1 win.

Robert Morris tied the game halfway through the second period on the power play goal by Tonge, with Israel and senior forward Daniel Leavens registering assists. But the Tigers followed with a goal of their own by Liam Kerins to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. The Colonials saw a 5-on-3 power play chance with less than a minute left in the second but couldn't find a way to capitalize.

RIT added to its lead with a power play goal scored by Brady Norrish. RMU nearly closed the deficit to one on a shorthanded breakaway chance for junior forward Spencer Dorowicz, but Tigers goaltender Mike Rotolo made the save. The Tigers iced the game with Girduckis' second goal of the game, capping the score at 4-1.

RMU had many scoring opportunities with nine power plays, finishing the game with a 35-31 lead in shots on goal. Both RIT (1-for-5) and RMU (1-for-9) recorded power play goals.

The Colonials (15-9-3, 11-8-2 AHC) will take on RIT (11-16-1, 11-11-0 AHC) again Saturday night with puck drop at 7:05pm. The first 800 fans at Saturday's game will take home RMU texting gloves, presented by UPMC. After the game, fans are invited to Skate With the Colonials. Bring your own skates or rent them from the RMU Island Sports Center for $3.
