Pittsburgh, Pa. - Robert Morris University men's hockey broke through in the third period for a 3-1 victory over RIT Saturday night at 84 Lumber Arena. Sophomore forward
Kyle Horsman tipped in the game-winning goal off a shot by junior defenseman
Robert Powers with 6:40 remaining in the game, part of a three-goal third period that secured a season split for RMU and RIT.
After two scoreless periods where the Colonials outshot RIT 31-13, the Tigers got on the board first, as Abbott Girduckis scored his third goal of the weekend 6:21 into the third, with two seconds remaining in the Tigers power play.
Robert Morris responded with a power play goal of its own with junior forward
Timmy Moore tying the game up less than three minutes later. Sophomore forward
Alex Tonge and junior forward
Brady Ferguson assisted on the goal that came just ten seconds after the Colonials thought they'd initially scored to tie the game. A quick whistle kept RMU from tying it up, but Ferguson won the ensuing faceoff and set up the goal by Moore. Moore adding on to his career-high total of 13 goals on the season.
With 6:40 remaining, junior forward
Alex Dagnal dished the puck to Powers who launched a one-timer that Horsman tipped in for his first goal of the season, earning Powers his third assist of the year, giving the Colonials their first lead of the game.
With the RIT goalie pulled and a Tigers power play, Robert Morris managed to add an empty-netter with 43 seconds left, Ferguson's second shorthanded tally in the last three games, sealing the 3-1 victory. Senior defenseman
Rob Mann tallied his sixth assist of the season on the goal. Ferguson, a Hobey Baker nominee, continues to lead Atlantic Hockey in scoring with 44 points. Freshman goaltender
Francis Marotte made 25 saves for his 13th victory of the season.
Robert Morris exits the weekend in third place in the Atlantic Hockey conference standings with 26 points, trailing first place Canisius (33 points) and second place Air Force (32 points), ahead of a three-way tie for fourth with Army West Point, Mercyhurst and Holy Cross all with 24 points.
