Walkoff Win Followed By Loss at Holy City Showdown

Mount Pleasant, S.C. – Stacey Capp had a walkoff single to give the Robert Morris University softball team a 3-2 win against Northern Kentucky to highlight the team's action at the second day of the Holy City Showdown hosted by the College of Charleston in Mount Pleasant, S.C., Saturday afternoon. The Colonials, now 5-15 on the season, lost to the host Cougars in the nightcap, 6-1.

Natalie Higgins went 3-for-6 and scored a run in the two games. Jordan Gurganus was the only other RMU player with multiple hits, collecting a pair of singles, a run batted in and a run scored in her eight at bats.

Eight of the Colonials nine starters recorded a hit in the opening contest against Northern Kentucky. Abrielle McCartney hit her third dinger of the year while Briana Bunner, Taylor Bartlow and Taryn Miller each recorded doubles.

Madison Riggle went the distance to earn her third victory. The rookie righthander scattered eight hits and struck out five while allowing just two earned runs.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Miller got the RMU rally started with a one-out double to right center field. Two wild pitches later, she crossed home to tie the game. With two outs, Gurganus beat out an infield single, then stole second. Stacey Capp promptly laced a 1-2 pitch to center field allowed her classmate to score the gamewinning run.

The Norse scored a single run in the third inning when Paige McQueen doubled in Sydney Ferrante. A sacrifice fly by Kara Meter allowed pinch-runner Isabell Alexander to push the lead to 2-0 in the fourth. McCartney sent a 3-2 pitch out in right center to cut the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Higgins accounted for two of the Colonials three hits in the nightcap against tournament host College of Charleston. Gurganus accounted for the other hit along with the only run batted in. Kaitlin Ellzy took the loss. She was touched up for five hits and two earned runs, only one earned, while striking out three in 3.2 innings. Laura worked the balance of the contest and was charged with four runs in 2.1 innings.

An error on a ground ball by Katie Padilla allowed Sara Garcia to score the game's first run for Charleston in the fourth inning. Huckaby then drove in Padilla with a single later in the inning to make it 2-0 after the fourth.

RMU got half of that total back in the fifth inning when Higgins led off the frame with a single. A wild pitch and ground out moved the rookie to third before Gurganus scored her with a single. The Cougars then tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. A wild pitch scored the first run before Jordin Jones laced a bases loaded double that drove in three more and capped the day's scoring.

Robert Morris finishes play at the tournament Sunday, March 12, when they take on North Carolina at 11:30 a.m.
