Moon Township, Pa. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse picked up its third win of the season in a hard-fought 9-7 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy.
The Colonials, now with a 3-3 overall record through six games of non-conference play, were led in scoring by sophomore
Maggie Stella who completed a hat trick with just under four minutes to play in the game, to put RMU ahead by two. Tied 5-5 with under eleven minutes to go, the Colonials powered ahead with four goals to clinch the victory. Stella posted two of those final four goals, with juniors
Dana Davis and
Alexis Rusnak scoring the other two.
In the first half, Colonials leading scorer freshman
Annie Sachs, gave RMU a 1-0 lead with a free position goal just over five minutes in. The goal marked the 15th of the season for the rookie Sachs. Detroit Mercy struck back to take a 2-1 lead but that would be the last time the Colonials trailed.
Mackenzie Gandy scored her tenth goal of the season with 10:23 left in the first half, starting a three-goal run for Robert Morris. Stella notched her first of the game, giving RMU a 3-2 lead at the half.
Davis opened the second half with a goal, her seventh of the season, to put RMU up by two. The Titans came within one before freshman
Clio Kerr tallied her third goal of the season on a free position shot. At the 20:16 mark, The Titans struck again and added another goal just 26 seconds later to tie the game at five apiece.
Gandy set up Stella for the go-ahead goal, before Davis picked up her second to extend the Colonials advantage to two. Detroit Mercy pulled back within one before Stella finished her hat trick with a man-down goal with just under four minutes to play. Gandy wasn't done dishing yet, tossing a crisp pass to Rusnak who buried the shot for her first goal of the season and the Colonials finished off the 9-7 win. Rusnak added a caused turnover in Saturday's effort as well.
Freshman goalkeeper
Katelyn Miller was again a bright point in goal, making ten saves and posting a .588 save percentage.
Robert Morris continued pounding the ground for 23 ground balls, three apiece coming from Davis, Sachs and freshman
Thalia Zolis. Senior defender
Megan Wolfgang, Miller, Stella and
Mackenzie Gandy each added two. Davis had three caused turnovers, with Wolfgang, Stella and Sachs chipping in two each, twelve total for RMU. Freshman
Meghan Crouse picked up two draw controls, while
Katie Breeze, Gandy, Kerr and senior defender
Amanda Harrington each had one.

UP NEXT
Robert Morris will travel to face George Washington on Saturday, March 11th at 1:00pm before returning home for a Monday night matchup on March 13th vs. Liberty University at 7:00pm under the lights at Joe Walton Stadium.
