RMU Tallies Season-High In Rout of Canisius

Moon Township, Pa. – Kaitlyn Ellzy faced one batter over the minimum and her teammates crossed the plate a season-high 12 times as the Robert Morris University softball team mercy-ruled visiting Canisius, 12-0, at North Athletic Complex Monday evening. The Colonials pounded out 13 hits to improve to 13-27 while the Golden Griffs slip to 16-26.

Ellzy faced 16 batters in five innings of work and allowed just one hit. The sophomore righty needed just 56 pitches as she found the strike zone with 33 of those to improve to 6-5 on the season.

Briana Bunner drove in three runs and was one of four Colonials to collect two hits on the afternoon. She also scored two times. Jordan Gurganus, Stacey Capp, Abrielle McCartney and Ashlee Groover all had two hits as well.

Robert Morris rolled right from the start as eight of the team's first nine batters reached base safely. Griffs starter Lauren Castro was chased from the game after facing nine batters and recording just one out. She was charged with six runs and walked two batters.

In that highlight reel first inning, Capp laced a double after Gurganus singled to start the game. McCartney singled home Gurganus, then a double steal brought home Capp. Natalie Higgins followed with an RBI single to left before Taylor Bartlow walked and Bunner singled to load the bases.

Kristen Pray drew a walk to make to it 4-0. A wild pitch scored another run before Groover lined a single past third base to cap a six-run first inning for the Colonials.

Olivia Lorusso singled to start the second inning and would move all the way over to third on a wild pitch. A groundout by McCartney counted as an RBI as Lorusso was able to cross home plate. In the third, Capp drove a two-out triple to the right field fence that plated Bunner and Gurganus for a pair of unearned runs.

Robert Morris stacked together four hits in the fourth inning, none bigger than the bases loaded double inside the left field foul line by Bunner that scored three runs. That hit put the Colonials on top 12-0 and capped the game's scoring.

The Colonials continue non-conference play Friday, April 21, when they travel to Saint Peter's for a Noon doubleheader.
