Colonials Cap Non-Conference Slate with Win Over Canisius

RMU secures first winning record in non-conference action since 2012

Moon Township, Pa. The Robert Morris University men's lacrosse team capped its non-conference portion of the 2017 schedule with a 12-7 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins Tuesday night under the lights of Joe Walton Stadium.

The victory helped the Colonials (9-4, 4-0 NEC) to their first winning record in non-conference action since 2012.

Sophomore midfield Tyson Gibson led all point scorers with a career-high six points on a career-high-tying two goals and a career-best four assists. Junior attack Adrian Torok-Orban tabbed two goals and two assists. Redshirt sophomore attack Matt Schmidt extended his current point streak to four games with his third consecutive hat trick and fourth straight multi-goal game. Freshman faceoff specialist Trey Arnold recorded a career-high two goals.

Arnold, junior defenseman Zac Christianson, and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Heger each collected five ground balls. Christianson forced a career-high four turnovers. Heger made 11 saves.

Canisius (5-7, 3-1 MAAC) outscored Robert Morris, 3-1, in the final frame, but the Colonials had already amassed a sizeable lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action. A man-up goal from Schmidt late in the third propelled RMU to an 11-4 advantage, its largest of the game.

The Golden Griffs hit the board first in the opening frame after nearly five minutes of scoreless action, but Robert Morris responded with a 9-2 run to close the first half with a six-goal lead.

RMU put 22 shots on goal to Canisius' 19 and posted a .958 clearing percentage (23-24). They won the ground ball battle with 32, and went 2-2 on extra man opportunities.

Robert Morris makes its last road trip of the regular season to Bryant on Saturday, Apr. 22 for a 1 p.m. game.
