Brooklyn, N.Y. - Robert Morris University women's lacrosse has clinched the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference tournament with a 22-17 win over LIU Brooklyn. Freshmen
Mackenzie Gandy (4 goals, 3 assists) and
Annie Sachs (2 goals, 5 assists), led the Colonials with 7 points, while sophomore
Kerri Sayrafe led the goal-scoring with six, her second-highest career outing.
The Colonials shot out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed, only allowing the Blackbirds within two goals, but never closer.
Katie Breeze finished off her hat trick in the first half, scoring her third goal of the game with six seconds left in the half. All three of Breeze's goals were scored with a player up, setting a new RMU single-game record.
RMU held an 11-8 lead at halftime. Thalia Zolis, Gandy and Sayrafe opened the second half scoring with a 3-0 run and extended the Colonials lead. Zolis had her best career day for RMU, recording her first hat trick and adding an assist for a four-point effort.
Meghan Crouse posted a goal and two assists.
Clio Kerr,
Maggie Stella and
Niki Grillon also tallied goals.
Sachs' impressive day included not only seven points but also eight draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. The seven points and two goals help the freshman midfielder tie two RMU single-season records. Sachs tied the single-season scoring record with 71 points, matching Kristin Yoviene's senior season in 2015, and the single-season goals record of 45 goals, set by Jenn Collins in 2006.
Miller posted her 11th win of the season, matching the RMU single-season record set by Kaitlin Pentz' 11 wins (11-6) in 2014.
Robert Morris' 22 goals and 12 assists combine for 34 points, the third-highest goal total and fourth-highest point total in a single game in RMU history. The Colonials won 25 draw controls, matching the highest single-game total in a game for RMU.
The Colonials (11-5, 5-1 NEC) match the program's highest win total (2014) and will be the No. 2 seed in the NEC postseason tournament. Robert Morris can still finish in first or second place, depending on Sunday's results for both RMU and Bryant, but the postseason seeding is set. The Colonials wrap up regular season play at Sacred Heart on Sunday at 12pm.
