Olean, N.Y. – The
Robert Morris University softball team split a mid-week doubleheader at St. Bonaventure University Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-3 in the opener before taking a 5-3 victory in the nightcap at Joyce Field. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Colonials who have won five of their last six and sit at 11-22 on the season. The Bonnies are now 9-20.
Madison Riggle went the distance in game two, tying her season-high with five strikeouts. She scattered eight hits and allowed just two earned runs to improve to 4-6.
Abrielle McCartney and
Jordan Gurganus each went 2-for-4 in the victory. McCartney added two runs batted in.
St. Bonaventure carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning before tacking on two more in the fourth. The Colonials first run of the game came from a bases-loaded fielder's choice by
Olivia Lorusso that allowed
Ashlee Groover to score.
In the fifth, Gurganus singled with one out to start a four-run inning.
Stacey Capp reached on an error and Lorusso walked to load the bases for McCartney. The sophomore came through with a single between short and third base that brought home two runs.
Natalie Higgins followed with single and
Taryn Miller plated another with a groundout to put RMU on top for good, 5-3.
Higgins made the lead stand, leaving three batters stranded in the last two innings, including two with a strikeout in the seventh.
The Bonnies took the lead in game one as scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Katie Isenberg cut the margin in half in the second, ripping a double over the left fielder's head to plate Miller who had reached base with a first-pitch single. RMU was able to tie the game in fourth inning, this time with
Taylor Bartlow singling to center to bring home Higgins who had done the same thing to start the frame.
The Bonnies went up, 3-2, when Elizabeth Enovitch scored on a single by Hailey Blencowe in the fifth. Higgins again crossed home plate in the sixth when Miller collected her second hit of the game. St. Bonaventure went up for good, 5-3, when Kelly Farrell sent a two-run shot over center field.
Miller went 2-for-3 in the game.
Laura Coulter suffered the loss as she came on for 5.1 innings of relief. She gave up three earned runs and seven hits while striking out three batters.
Robert Morris will try to play its first home games of the season Saturday, April 8, when they host Mount St. Mary's in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at North Athletic Complex.
