Moon Township, Pa. – The
Robert Morris University softball team dropped a set of makeup games to Wagner College, 10-2 and 9-2, Monday afternoon at North Athletic Complex. The loss drops the Colonials record to 17-31 and evens its Northeast Conference mark at 7-7. Wagner is now 20-23 and 10-6 in the league.
Taryn Miller was the offensive star for the Colonials going 3-of-4. The rookie first basemen hit a two-run homer in game one and also collected a double on the day.
Abrielle McCartney also had three hits and added an RBI in game two.
Stacey Capp and Brianna Bunner had two hits each.
Kaitlin Ellzy worked five strong innings in the opener before running into trouble in the sixth inning. The Seahawks put the first five batters on in that inning, breaking open the shutout on a Hana Gilbert run-scoring double. Before the frame ended, Wagner collected five hits and five runs.
The Seahawks tacked on five more in the seventh with Karen Prihoda providing the highlight with a two-run homer to left field. Robert Morris tallied its only runs of the game with a two-run blast by Miller, her third of the season, in the seventh.
In game two, the Colonials committed seven errors, including three in the first inning. That allowed the Seahawks to take a 2-0 lead before RMU ever got to bat. Wagner then collected three hits in the second inning to add three more runs to their lead.
Capp walked and
Olivia Lorusso doubled to right center to start the third inning. McCartney knocked in Capp with a fielder's choice before
Natalie Higgins singled down the right field line to score Lorusso, cutting the margin to 5-2.
That was all the offense the Colonials could muster, however. Wagner added a single run in the fourth inning and scored three more in the fifth, with help from a pair of throwing errors, to take a 9-2 lead. Play was suspended in the top of the sixth due to weather and would not resume, giving the visitors the sweep.
Robert Morris returns to the diamond Saturday, May 6, when they Mount St. Mary's in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
