Buffalo, N.Y. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team suffered heartbreak for the second consecutive game as the Colonials fell to Canisius in overtime, 4-3, this afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex.
Robert Morris (0-3-0, 0-0-0 NEC) raced out to a three-goal advantage in the first half, but Canisius (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) chipped away with goals in the 41st, 70th, and 86th minutes before winning it in the extra frame.
After assisting on a pair of goals this past Sunday, Jake Cooper decided it was his turn to be on the other end of a goal in the 12th minute. After RMU won a free kick just outside the box, Keane McIvor swung in a cross from the right, meeting Cooper's head for the opening tally.
McIvor notched another assist in the 30th minute on a Christian Coridon goal. Coridon's first career tally featured a clinical finish as he corralled the ball in the box before ripping a shot to the upper right 90, making it impossible for the goalkeeper to save.
The Colonials made it 3-0 in the 41st minute with some solid teamwork as Rafael Bruzual played it forward to Bayley Winkel, who then grounded it across the six to Corey McCurdy to tap it in.
The Golden Griffins had an immediate answer as Filippo Tamburini found the back of the netting five seconds after McCurdy's tally.
Canisius pulled within one in the 70th minute as Evan Walsh beat Winter Fondi with a shot to the right post. The hosts then grabbed an equalizer in the 86th minute with a volley at the top of the box from Melvin Blair.
The winner came 28 seconds into overtime as Troy Brady tucked one inside the left post off a pass by Blair.
McCurdy, who also picked up his first RMU goal after assisting on five others in his career, led the Colonials with three shots on the afternoon. Fondi made six saves in the defeat.
Robert Morris returns home to host Marshall at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3.
