PITTSBURGH – The Robert Morris University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win (25-10, 25-17, 25-19) over Coppin State and then fell 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 20-25) to host Duquesne as the Colonials concluded play at the Duquesne Invitational on Saturday at the Palumbo Center.
With the split the Colonials move to 3-6 on the season.
Against Coppin State, freshman
Alyson Londot and classmate
Emma Granger combined for 22 kills, nine digs and hit a combined to hit .375. Londot paced the Colonials with 14 kills while Granger added eight and freshman outside hitter
Mirna Sarjanovic totaled seven kills and a career-high 13 digs.
Junior libero/defensive specialist
Allie Yurkovich led RMU with 14 digs while freshman
Whitney Brown added 13 digs. Brown also dished out a career-high 30 assists for her second-career double-double.
In set one, Robert Morris raced out to a 15-6 lead on a service error. The Colonials then took a 20-8 lead on a Sarjanovic kill. From there, the Colonials closed out the set on a 5-2 run. Coppin State took an early 3-0 lead in the second set before Robert Morris answered with 11-4 run to take an 11-7 lead.
Another Sarjanovic kill pushed the Colonial lead to 19-12 before the Eagles cut the lead to 20-16. RMU used a 5-1 run to take the second set. RMU opened the third set on a 5-2 run before Coppin State took a 10-9 lead. After a
Skylar Clements kill made it 20-17, the Colonials used another 5-2 run to win the set and the match.
Against Duquesne, junior
Taylor Lord tallied her third double-double of the season as she collected 12 kills and 11 digs. Londot recorded nine kills and seven digs while Granger and
Maria Alfano each totaled six digs. Yurkovich paced Robert Morris with 15 digs. Senior
Brianna Frakes tallied 20 assists, while Brown added 10.
RMU and Duquesne split the first 10 points of the opening set before the Dukes took a 10-6 lead on an attack error. Duquesne stretched the lead to 17-10 before going up 21-14. The Colonials pulled to within 24-20 but could not complete the comeback.
The second set saw the Colonials take a 7-3 lead on a kill from Sarjanovic. A few points later Londot gave RMU a 10-4 lead. Robert Morris took a 15-9 lead on a service ace from Granger which forced a Dukes timeout. Duquesne answered by taking a 16-15 lead before a kill from Alfano gave the Colonials a 19-17 lead.
After taking a 22-21 lead, RMU could not close out the set as the Dukes used a 4-0 run to win the set. Robert Morris raced out to an 8-2 third set lead before Duquesne tied the set at 10-10. The Colonials tied the set at 16-16 before the Dukes took a 22-18 lead and control of the set.
Robert Morris returns to the court on Friday-Saturday, September 8-9 when it travels to Philadelphia for the Valley Force Sports Invitational.
Notes:
Granger was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 3.18 kills/set and 1.09 blocks/set. She totaled 35 kills in four matches while hitting a blistering .448 in 67 total attacks.
