Pittsburgh, Pa. –
Robert Morris University men's hockey battled to a 3-3 tie with Bentley on Saturday afternoon at Colonials Arena. The game was the 500
th in the history of the Robert Morris men's hockey team and for head coach
Derek Schooley.
Not just a historic night for the program to reach the 500 game milestone, but senior forward
Brady Ferguson climbed another rung in the record books. The Carrollton, Texas native and Hobey Baker nominee reached 150 career points, scored his 60
th career goal, became the RMU all-time assists leader and the program's second all-time leading scorer.
With less than seven minutes to play, it appeared Ferguson had launched a goal to give the Colonials the win as well. His 60
th career goal came with 6:29 to play, ripping a shot past Jayson Argue to put RMU ahead 3-2. Junior forward
Alex Tonge and senior defenseman
Robert Powers each earned their second assists of the game on the goal.
But Bentley found an answer with just 1:21 left in the game to force overtime on an extra-attacker goal by Luke Santerno, his second of the game. A bouncing puck made its way through couple of bodies and past
Francis Marotte to knot the game 3-3.
Neither team scored in the overtime frame, Bentley recording four shots to RMU's two. The Falcons had one power play opportunity but the Colonials killed the penalty and didn't allow a shot.
Bentley opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the game on a strike by their goals leader Kyle Schmidt.
Colonials freshman
Nick Prkusic buried a terrific feed from sophomore
Luke Lynch to tally the equalizer and even the game at 1-1. Powers picked up his first assist on the goal and now has 9 on the season, reaching a career-high with 10 points.
The Falcons struck back three minutes later with Santerno's first of the game, this time on the power play, giving Bentley a 2-1 advantage.
RMU returned fire three minutes later on the second top-shelf snipe of the weekend for senior
Timmy Moore. The 30
th career goal from Moore came after Ferguson dropped a
pass back on his stick and Moore would not be denied.
The second period featured plenty of scoring but the Colonials defensive effort was stout. RMU blocked 11 shots in the second frame, by 10 different players. Robert Morris totaled 19 blocked shots for the game, with
Alex Bontje,
Eric Israel and
Brandon Watt each laying out for three, while
Nick Jenny and
Elias Ghantous posted up for two.
Ferguson recorded his 60
th career goal to put the Colonials up with 6:29 left in the third before Bentley force overtime and the eventual tie.
Marotte made 31 saves a pair of crucial glove saves, one on Schmidt in the first period to hold the early damage to 1-0. The second coming in the third period with 3:12 remaining to deny the game-tying goal. RMU's defensive effort swelled following that save, with Bentley pressuring, Bontje and
Jacob Coleman worked to clear the puck out of the zone and the Colonials captain followed with a blocked shot at the end of a lengthy shift nearly a minute later.
The Colonials had just two power play opportunities and went 0-for-2 while the penalty kill was 3-for-4.
Robert Morris took three of four points from Bentley and is fifth in the Atlantic Hockey conference standings with 20 points, four points back of co-leaders Canisius and Holy Cross (24). Niagara has 22 points and Mercyhurst has 21.
The Colonials (10-12-2, 9-7-2 AHC) are back in action beginning a four-game road swing next Friday against AIC.
