Blue Devils Find Late Winner to Spook Colonials

Robert Morris drops its third consecutive 1-0 decision despite outshooting Central Connecticut, 18-9

Moon Township, Pa. – The Robert Morris University men's soccer team created its fair share of scoring opportunities, but Central Connecticut found the back of the net with a header in the 82nd minute to top the Colonials, 1-0, this afternoon in Northeast Conference (NEC) from the North Athletic Complex.

Despite doubling up Central Connecticut (1-11-1, 1-5-0 NEC) in shot attempts (18-9) and owning a 9-2 difference in shots on goal, Robert Morris (4-10-1, 2-4-0 NEC) couldn't cash in on any of its chances and ultimately suffers its third straight 1-0 defeat.

In the 15th minute, Riccardo Rota – making his first career start – tried his luck at a diving header, but Carson D'Ambrosio was there to make the save.

RMU generated a pair of dangerous counter attacks in the 39th and 40th minutes, but both were eventually flagged for offside.

After withstanding some pressure from the Blue Devils to begin the second half, the Colonials went into attack mode. Lorenzo Guagneli was denied at the near post in the 65th minute, with Zac Sherman hitting the rebound over the crossbar. Five minutes later, Guagneli took a strong shot from distance, but D'Ambrosio got low to make the save.

Rota had an attempt saved at the near post in the 80th minute, and CCSU soon countered with the game-winning goal. Larson Richards carried the ball down the right flank and lofted a cross into the box, connecting with Louis Beddouri on a diving header in the 82nd minute.

RMU won a free kick in the 89th minute on the edge of the 18, but Guilherme Fanck's strike was right at D'Ambrosio.

Winter Fondi made one save in the loss. Rota led all players with five shot attempts and three on goal.

Robert Morris hits the road for the final time in the regular season on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m. against Mount St. Mary's.
